Internazionale’s Championship Hopes Hoping

Inter escaped with a 2-2 draw when they visited AS Roma over the weekend, extending their current unbeaten streak to four matches. However, after failing to pick up all three points in Sunday’s contest, Inter now lags behind first-place Juventus by eight points on the Serie A table with just four matches remaining on the league schedule.

While the club remains mathematically in reach of the top of the table, their greater concern right now is to maintain their narrow lead over third-place Atalanta and fourth-place Lazio, who trail enter Round 35 trailing Inter by just one point and three points respectively.

Inter Struggling to Finish Opponents

An inability to finish off opponents while holding a lead has been a problem for Internazionale since Serie A resumed play in mid-June. The club has stumbled to a middling 5-4-1 win-draw-loss record in 10 outings across all competitions since returning to action, blowing an early lead in each of the five contests in which they failed to pick up all three points. And while Inter has tallied an impressive 15 total goals in five home matches since play resumed, they have failed to record consecutive victories during that stretch, earning just one total point after scoring first in dates with Sassuolo and Bologna.

Inter’s freewheeling attack and defensive breakdowns add value to the -150 odds of both teams scoring in Wednesday’s matchup at Stadio Giuseppe Meazza. And with the club regularly filling the net on home turf, a wager on Inter to win and both teams to score is particularly attractive at +136. However, the Nerazzurri can ill afford to look past Fiorentina, who arrive in Milan playing some of their best soccer of the season.

Fiorentina on a Roll

Fresh off their first home win since January, a 2-0 shutout win over Torino this past weekend, Fiorentina hit the road for Wednesday’s matchup pegged as lengthy +550 underdogs in the Serie A Matchday 35 odds. A dismal recent record against Inter, whom they have dropped four straight to on the road is a big contributing factor in those odds being so long. Fiorentina have been outscored by a wide 11-4 margin during the four-match slide, and remain winless in six overall meetings with Milan.

However, La Viola have shown steady improvement since returning to action last month. After earning just a single point through their first three June contests, Fiorentina have made a solid about-face, going 3-2-0 in their past five contests. A stingy defense has been key to the club’s recent success. Fiorentina has allowed just three total goals during their recent surge, which features victories in their past two road outings, over Parma and Lecce.

A Tough Test Awaits in Milan

Of course, Fiorentina must expect to face far stiffer competition against Inter Milan than what they saw in their recent road wins over a pair of Serie A bottom-feeders. The club has struggled to garner points in recent road dates with top-flight opponents, getting outscored by a 7-2 margin in a trio of losses to Lazio, Juventus, and Inter.

But with Bartłomiej Drągowski rapidly emerging as one of the best young goalkeepers in Serie A, Fiorentina are well-positioned to keep things close, making La Viola an intriguing +180 wager as a one-goal underdog in three-way spread betting.

Pick: Inter to win and both teams score (+165)
