  • Holders can seal first place in Group E with victory on November 27
  • Both teams will advance if Salzburg fail to beat Genk
  • Italians defeated Klopp’s side 2-0 on Matchday 1 but are +438 for a repeat performance on Matchday 5

Liverpool and Napoli meet in a collision of the two pace-setters in Champions League Group E next Wednesday. Both could progress to the last 16.

Jurgen Klopp’s team are the holders and lead the table with nine points. Carlo Ancelotti’s Napoli side are second just a point behind ahead of the meeting at Merseyside on November 27, at Anfield, Liverpool, at 3.00 pm EST.

A win will secure first place for the English club. They will guarantee a place in the last 16 if Red Bull Salzburg do not beat Genk in the group’s other fixture.

Napoli will secure progress to the knockout stage with a victory or, again, if Salzburg do not beat Genk.

Surprise for Reds in Italy

The Italians scored a surprise 2-0 win against Liverpool on Matchday 1.

But the English Premier League leaders have recovered with three straight victories since then.

After a dramatic 4-3 defeat of Salzburg at home on Matchday 2, they hammered Genk 4-1 in Belgium. That was followed by a 2-1 win in England against the Belgians in the return fixture.

Napoli stuttered in a 0-0 draw at Genk on Matchday 2 but then raised their fortunes again with a 3-2 victory away at Salzburg in Austria.

Liverpool are in impressive form and were undefeated leaders of the EPL after 12 fixtures with 11 wins and one draw.

A 1-1 draw followed in Italy in the return match against Red Bull Salzburg.

The setback against Napoli in September is their only defeat this season.

They are unbeaten in 24 European home games since a 3-0 defeat against Real Madrid in October 2014 – with the run comprising of 18 wins and six draws.

Anfield Has Become a Fortress

Liverpool have not lost a home EPL match at Anfield since a 2-1 reverse against Crystal Palace in April 2017 – a run of 46 league matches.

Similarly to this campaign, they lost 1-0 away at Napoli in the group stage last season but won 1-0 at home.

This helped them finish second in the group by edging out the Italians, with Klopp’s team marching on to beat EPL rivals Tottenham Hotspur 2-0 in the final in Madrid last June.

The Serie A club has been beset by unrest following a revolt by the squad against the controversial owner, Aurelio De Laurentiis.

He ordered the players to attend a five-day in-house retreat at the club’s training HQ following the draw against Salzburg earlier this month. But they refused.

The team subsequently drew 0-0 at home against Genoa in the last match before the recent international break.

Liverpool beat England’s reigning champions Manchester City 3-1 at home before the break in a victory which handed them an eight-point lead at the top of the EPL as they seek their first title triumph since 1990.
