Canada will be aiming to punch their ticket to the CONCACAF Gold Cup Final for the first time since 2000 when they battle Mexico in semi-final action on Thursday night as lengthy +550 underdogs.

The Canadians are coming off a decisive 2-0 victory over Costa Rica in their knockout stage opener. However, they face a huge challenge to overcome their historic struggles against Mexico, who look to Thursday’s clash as lofty -175 favorites to return to the Gold Cup final for the sixth time in their past eight tournament appearances.

Here’s a look at all the odds and trends as Canada and Mexico get set to clash on Sunday night at 8:30 pm ET at NRG Stadium in Houston against the winner of the other semi-final featuring Qatar vs USA.

Canada Rewriting Losing Narrative

Canada is poised to overcome two decades of futility at this tournament when they hit the pitch for Thursday night’s semi-final matchup. The squad has produced steady results since the last edition of the Gold Cup two years ago, posting wins in 14 of 17 outings across all competitions while keeping clean sheets on nine occasions during that stretch.

With the exception of the heartbreaking 1-0 loss to the United States in their group stage finale that denied them first place on the Group B table, the Canadians have been steady offensive producers at this year’s tournament, scoring 10 total goals over their three victories.

Loss of Larin, Akinola a Harsh Blow

However, injuries have emerged as a massive concern for Canada as they continue their march towards their first Gold Cup title in 21 years. The squad will have to make do without two key players up front after seeing Cyle Larin and Toronto FC star Ayo Akinola both get sidelined in last week’s loss to the Americans.

The loss of Larin is a particularly harsh blow. The 26-year-old has played a huge role in Canada’s recent success in World Cup qualifying, potting seven goals in six outings. The absence of his offensive flair will be harshly felt against the free-wheeling Mexicans, who have dominated in head-to-head meetings with Canada in recent years. El Tri have posted wins in four straight meetings, including a pair of Gold Cup clashes, and have outscored the Canadians by a wide 10-1 overall margin during that stretch.

Mexico Enjoying Lengthy Unbeaten Streak

Complicating matters further for Canada is the seven-match undefeated streak across all competitions that Mexico rides into Thursday night’s Gold Cup semi-final matchup. The Mexicans have not surrendered a goal during their current 5-2-0 win-draw-loss run, including tournament victories over Guatemala, El Salvador, and Honduras.

Even more impressive is Mexico’s recent track record at this tournament. The defending Gold Cup champions have suffered just one overall defeat at the Gold Cup since 2013, a stunning upset loss to Jamaica in semi-final action four years ago. Not surprisingly, El Tri leads the way as high-value +100 favorites to lift the trophy once again this time around.

El Tri Effective at Both Ends of Pitch

But while Mexico have been particularly effective at shutting down opposing shooters, their steady offensive production has caused headaches for sports bettors taking the UNDER in totals betting. The squad has scored three goals twice over their past three outings and tallied at least that many markers on four occasions during their current unbeaten run.

Rogelio Funes Mori has led the attack for Mexico at this year’s tournament. The Liga MX All-Star has found the back of the net on a team-leading three occasions and has now scored four total goals in five appearances since making his debut with Mexico’s national squad. The 30-year-old striker also leads the way on the player props, sporting attractive +120 odds to score at some point in Thursday’s contest.

The Picks: Mexico -1.5 (+160); OVER 2.5 (+115)
