Impact Face Stiff Test vs Undefeated Lions

The Montreal Impact will be aiming to win consecutive league contests during the same season for the first time in 13 months when they take on Orlando City in MLS is Back Round of 16 action as distant +250 underdogs. The Impact are coming off their first win of the tournament, a stunning 1-0 victory over previously undefeated DC United to clinch third place in Group C.

Despite rising to the occasion in their group stage finale, the Impact have an uphill battle to fight in their bid to further advance at this tournament. The club tallied four total goals in group stage action but saw half of those markers come on penalties, a luxury they cannot count on in Saturday’s date the Group A winners.

While the Impact needed heroics in their final outing to advance to the knockout stage, Orlando City punched their ticket in style, opening the tournament with wins over Inter Miami and New York City before nailing down top spot on the Group A table with a 1-1 draw in their finale against the Philadelphia Union.

The Lions recent success marks a dramatic turnaround, ending the club’s 10-match winless streak in league play that had dated back to August of last year. The biggest difference in Orlando City has been defense. The club has allowed just three total goals so far in the tournament after surrendering 19 total goals during their preceding 0-5-5 win-draw-loss run.

City have received a big lift from midfielder Chris Mueller, who has potted three of the club’s six goals to date and will need more of the same if they are to get past Montreal, who have beaten them by multi-goal margins in three of the past meetings between these clubs.

Picks: Draw (+260); OVER 3.5 (+145)

Revs, Union Clash After Falling Short of First-Place Group Stage Finishes

Later on Saturday night, the Philadelphia Union square off against the New England Revolution as narrow +150 chalk in what promises to be a closely fought defensive battle. The Union came within one goal of knocking off Orlando City in the race for the top of the Group A table. However, the club’s reward for going undefeated in group stage action is arguably the toughest matchup of the Round 16, against the unbeaten Revs.

After surrendering just two total goals in the group stage, the Union advance riding a four-match unbeaten streak in league play. While consistency had been an issue down the stretch last season, the Union have settled down considerably since the tournament began. They have allowed just one first-half goal so far in the tournament, but must find ways to generate more offense after tallying just seven total goals in their first five matches of 2020.

The Revolution played smothering defense during the group stage, allowing just one total goal while finishing deadlocked with Toronto FC with a 1-2-0 record. But with just two total goals scored, New England are forced to settle for second place on the Group C table. With goals coming at a premium, Revs fans can be forgiven for their anxiety after playmaker Carles Gil was spotted wearing a protective boot during the club’s group stage finale.

Gil led the club by a wide margin with 14 assists last season, and has been key in driving the Revolution’s limited offense so far in the tournament. His status should be closely watched ahead of Sunday’s contest, but even if the 30-year-old Argentine star is available to go, this promises to be a low-scoring affair, with the likelihood of a draw for the second time in as many meetings between these two clubs offering value as a +260 bet.

Picks: Draw (+260); UNDER 2.5 (+115)
