It’s the final of the Coppa Italia on Wednesday, with Juventus meeting Napoli in Rome’s Stadio Olimpico. Serie A returns on 20 June, with the first of 124 games scheduled to be played in a span of 44 days but, by way of an aperitif, the second legs of the held-over Coppa Italia semifinals were played last week, with Juve and Napoli both earning their places in Rome.

Draws All Round

The first legs of both semi-finals were played before the lockdown, and it wasn’t until the end of last week – the first games of Italian soccer post-lockdown – that Juve and Napoli secured their places in the final. Both teams made it to Rome by virtue of low-key draws.

For Juventus, a 0-0 home draw with AC Milan was just enough to secure their place on the away-goals rule, after they’d drawn 1-1 in the San Siro back in February, while Napoli came from behind to earn a 1-1 draw at home against Inter Milan which after, winning the first-leg 1-0, was enough.

Record-Breaking Juve

If Napoli wins on Wednesday night it will be their first Coppa Italia since 2014, but the challenge is a massive one with the Bianconeri still competing on all fronts this season, including the Champions League. Juve also has the small matter of 13 Coppa Italia titles behind them.

But the team from Naples will believe they can win this and will come up against some familiar faces, with Juve manager Maurizio Sarri and striker Gonzalo Higuain both previously with Gli Azzurri. As a result, there will be no inferiority complex and while some teams are beaten before they take the field again Juve, this won’t be the case on Wednesday.

Pedigree of the Old Lady

There’s no escaping Juve’s pedigree in this competition, and as well as their 13 wins – more than any other team in the competition’s history – keeper Gigi Buffon has won the competition no less than five times over the course of his career. With a win over Napoli, the veteran goalie will equal Roberto Mancini’s record of six Coppa Italia winners’ medals.

Unfortunately for Napoli, they will be without keeper David Ospina – a hero in the semi-final – as the Colombian picked up a yellow card in the Inter game and is suspended for the final. Alex Meret will take his place in goal.

Napoli boss Gennaro Gattuso is also hoping that Kostas Manolas and Kevin Malcuit, who both missed the second leg of the semi-final last week – will both pass late fitness tests, but regardless, if either or both make it, he still has a strong-looking and confident squad to pick from. Gattuso will though be without winger Hirving Lozano who he sent home from training on Tuesday for showing a poor attitude.

Napoli Still Fancied

For Juve, Giorgio Chiellini and Aaron Ramsey are definitely out but Sarri has an otherwise fully-fit squad to pick from as he looks to win his first trophy in the Italian top-flight. Buffon will continue in goal but it looks likely that Juan Cuadrado could come into the side to replace Danilo.

Ominously for Napoli, Cristiano Ronaldo had an off-night against AC Milan – including a penalty miss – and will be looking to put this right on Wednesday, where he’ll be supported again by Douglas Costa and Paulo Dybala, in a star-studded front-three.

Ronaldo to Star?

The fact Napoli has had such an underwhelming season in Serie A shouldn’t disguise the fact they have a real chance here, and let’s not forget that last season they were Juve’s main challengers for the title. It remains a talented squad, one that’s capable of causing an upset.

But Juve are Juve, and with Ronaldo due for a big performance, it’s hard to bet against them, especially when they remain in plus-money. It will be tight, but I expect the Old Lady to edge it.

Pick: Juventus to win (+102)
