The Group of Death hasn’t failed to live up to expectations yet, but Saturday’s meeting between Portugal vs Germany will prove to be key. While the Portuguese cruised to a 3-0 victory over Hungary on Tuesday, the Germans suffered a 1-0 defeat to France due to a Mats Hummels own goal early in the first half.

The last time these two heavyweights locked horns was in the 2014 World Cup, with Germany running out as 4-0 winners behind a Thomas Muller hat-trick. In fact, they’ve secured four straight victories against Portugal.

Cristiano Ronaldo Leading the Way

By little surprise to anyone, Cristiano Ronaldo was the storyline in Portugal’s Euro 2020 opener. While Fernando Santos’ side was given a run for their money by Hungary for most of the fixture, Ronaldo’s brilliance shined through late in the second period.

Dortmund standout Raphael Guerreiro opened the scoring with a goal in the 84th minute on a deflected shot that trickled past Hungarian keeper Peter Gulacsi. Just minutes later, Cristiano was given the chance to capitalize from the spot after Rafa Silva was taken down in the box. Needless to say, he buried it with a fine finish.

The 36-year-old then dismantled the Hungary backline with a beautiful string of give and go’s with Silva to bag his second of the day. In the process, Ronaldo became the all-time leading scorer in this competition with 11 goals in a total of five tournaments, which is also a record.

The current title-holders fully lived up to expectations despite getting off to a slow start but they will have a daunting task ahead on Saturday because their success against Germany has been next to none.

However, this squad is much different than seven years ago and possesses a lot more young talent that is hungry for a taste of European glory. This clash also presents the opportunity to potentially end the Germans’ hopes of advancing to the knockout rounds, depending on the scoreline. One thing to keep in mind, though. Ronaldo has never scored on Manuel Neuer in international football, which is impressive in itself for the Bayern stopper.

Germany Need to Find the End Product

From a technical standpoint, Die Mannschaft was relatively impressive against the French. But, their finishing severely lacked. A total of 10 shots saw just one hit the target despite outplaying France to the tune of 62% possession. The absence of legitimate opportunities in the final third was evident and that will absolutely need to change on Saturday.

After a defeat on home soil, Germany will be hungry for a bounce-back performance in Munich against a country that they’ve dominated in recent memory. Joachim Low will likely deploy a similar starting XI, however, it’s likely you’ll see Bayern attacker Leroy Sane replace Kai Havertz, who was rather uninspiring in his tournament debut. Sane added a spark up top in the second half and is definitely a player capable of creating a moment of brilliance.

The Germans will surely want a victory, but even a draw could still keep their hopes alive at seeing themselves through to the round of 16, depending on how Hungry fares against Les Bleus. There are four spots up for grabs for the best third-place teams based on goal difference followed by head-to-head record, which means not all is lost if the three points aren’t secured in Germany’s second game.

Low’s men have been in the semifinals of the last two European Championships while finishing as runners-up in 2008, which means there are definitely high expectations for the side.

Portugal vs Germany Prediction

This is sure to be a thrilling match. Both sides have tons of quality throughout their squads and despite Germany’s superiority against Portugal, they’ve been in poor form as of late.

Nonetheless, with the support of the home fans and the need for a victory, I believe you’re going to see the Germans pull through and beat the holders.

Pick: Germany +133
