Slovakia vs Spain clash in a vital Group E encounter on Wednesday as both teams fight for a spot in the round of 16 at Euro 2020.

The Slovaks are currently in second with three points after beating Poland and losing a heartbreaker to group leaders Sweden. The Spaniards on other hand are in a very shaky position with just two points and a lone goal following a 1-1 draw with Poland on Saturday.

While Spain does enter as a massive favorite, this should be a much closer fixture than expected.

Can Slovakia Pull Off the Unthinkable?

The Slovakians head into this meeting knowing that a victory will send them through to the knockout stages, while a draw would potentially still allow them to progress as a third-place team, depending on the results elsewhere.

Stefan Tarkovic’s side started off the tournament in fine fashion with a win over the Poles but a defeat to Sweden over the weekend was certainly a disappointment. Slovakia struggled in the final third against the Swedes, failing to register a shot on target. An Emil Forsberg spot-kick sealed the deal for the hosts but in fairness, it was a relatively even game with a clear lack of flair for both sides.

Now, the Slovaks face a very daunting task. While Spain has looked far from convincing, they’re still a world-class team with top, top talent. However, in the last two major competitions, Slovakia needed a positive result in their final group stage match in order to advance to the round of 16 and they pulled it off each time. Hopefully, the third time is a charm.

All-time leading scorer Marek Hamsik has yet to find the back of the net in the competition and the Slovakians will surely need him to step up in such a massive clash for the country. Coming into this game, Tarkovic’s men have lost just once in their last six appearances.

Pressure Situation for Spain

Despite being tabbed as one of the favorites to lift the trophy, Spain has struggled immensely. The only way Luis Enrique’s squad can actually get to the last 16 at this point is with a victory. Matchday 1 saw La Roja play to a scoreless draw with Sweden in a very one-sided encounter. The Spaniards had a ridiculous 85-percent possession but couldn’t bag a goal to save their lives.

Then on Saturday, Espana netted early against Poland courtesy of Alvaro Morata, who calmly met a beautiful Gerard Moreno pass in the box. However, the lead didn’t last long. Robert Lewandowski equalized for the visitors with an emphatic header just after halftime.

Moreno then had a chance to put his side ahead from the spot in a very controversial penalty call in the 58th minute. But the Villarreal man smashed it off the post with Morata proceeding to miss an absolute sitter on the rebound as they ultimately settled for a lone point.

Spain has strung together just under 1,700 passes through two games, which is by far more than any other country in Euro 2020. But, there’s literally been nothing to show for it. Enrique could make some changes in the starting XI on Wednesday because of the lack of production in the final third.

There’s a plethora of attacking options on the bench such as Adama Traore, Ferran Torres, and Mikel Oyarzabal. It will be interesting to see if the boss will bring in some fresh talent because the Spaniards definitely need a spark.

Slovakia vs Spain Prediction

It’s hard to imagine Slovakia coming out victorious here with Spain’s tournament fate on the line. However, I do think they will put up a respectable fight. The end product just hasn’t been there for the Spaniards even though all of their fixtures have been on home soil. Nevertheless, they will pull through and secure a slim one-goal victory over the Slovaks.

Pick: Spain to Win by 1 (+285)
