So Close for Spirited Suriname

Suriname’s tournament may be effectively over but they have made their mark and have proved themselves to be difficult opponents. Last Friday, they gave Costa Rica an almighty scare and despite being massive underdogs against one of the more fancied teams in the tournament, they more than held their own and, in fact, took the lead on 52 minutes through Gleofilo Vlijter.

Unfortunately for Suriname, they lost their focus a little after taking the lead and could only sustain it for six minutes. Had they have been able to maintain their focus and consolidated their lead it could have been a different story, but the Costa Ricans were able to call on their extra experience and quality to score twice in quick succession to take the game away from Suriname.

But, while disappointing, it was still a performance to be proud of and was a step up in level from their opener, a 2-0 defeat by Jamaica that came courtesy of two early goals. If against Guadeloupe, they can hit the levels they found against Costa Rica, it could be enough to win the game and earn their first points of the tournament.

Guadeloupe Take Jamaica All the Way

Guadeloupe, like tonight’s opponents, also saved their best soccer for their second game of the tournament when they played Jamaica. In a lively encounter, Guadeloupe took the lead came after just four minutes via a deflected shot, and while the Jamaicans equalized just ten minutes later, it was an end-to-end game that could have gone either way. In the end, Jamaica’s winner did not arrive until three minutes from time.

Had Guadeloupe been able to hang on for those final few minutes, a point would have given them an outside chance of progressing to the knockout phase but, as it transpired, they now have a record of five straight Gold Cup defeats.

Few Changes Expected After Impressive Outings

Gleofilo Vlijter’s goal for Suriname was their first-ever in the finals of the Gold Cup but was his 12th for his country and just one more will see him pull level with Stefano Rijssel as his country’s all-time leading goalscorer. On what better stage to equal that record than in the Gold Cup. The Suriname starting XI was unchanged over the first two games and that good performance against Costa Rica suggests Dean Gorré will go with an unchanged team again.

Guadeloupe also looks likely to stick mainly with the line-up that took Jamaica all the way, which means Quentin Annette staying in the center of their midfield, meaning Morgan Saint-Maximin will again be asked to play a little wider and make an impact from there. It also means that striker Raphael Mirval, who came off the bench against Jamaica after 15 minutes, will likely start the game alongside Dimitri Ramothe,  Matthias Phaeton, and Kevin Moeson.

Suriname vs Guadeloupe Best Bets

With both teams already eliminated from the competition, this game is technically a dead rubber but both are proud soccer-playing nations who would place enormous value on a win at the Gold Cup finals. Also, neither will want to head home without a point on the board.

Both come into this off the back of good performances in game 2, both feeling a little aggrieved at not having earned a point. For Suriname, there is the advantage of having an experienced squad, while the younger group of Guadeloupe will play with more verve and energy.

The odds suggest that Suriname has the edge in quality but, for me, neither will want to end with zero points, which in itself has me leaning towards a low-scoring draw.
