Must-Win for Switzerland and Turkey

Switzerland’s future in this tournament hangs in the balance after picking up only a single point so far, and they need a win here if they are to emulate their performance in Euro 2016 when, for the first time, they made it to the round-of-16. It has been disappointing for the Swiss so far, who came into the competition ranked 13th in the world by FIFA and off the back of six consecutive wins.

In their opening game against Wales, the Swiss dominated for long spells and took the lead early in the second half with a header from Breel Embolo, but were disappointed to concede an equalizer on 74 minutes when Kiefer Moore glanced in a header for the Welsh. For Switzerland, it was two points dropped and this proved doubly costly for them four days later when they suffered a 3-0 thumping by the impressive Italians in Rome.

But all is not lost for Vladimir Petkovic’s men who know that a win will almost certainly still take them through and, with Wales playing Italy in their final group game, could yet see them finish second in the table. There is, however, no more room for error, and the likes of Xherdan Shaqiri and Embolo need to deliver.

Poor Euros Record for the Turks

Turkey’s 3-0 opening day defeat by Italy was not unexpected but it did mean they have now lost their opening game in five consecutive European Championships. Unfortunately for them, despite playing Wales in Baku on Wednesday in front of a crowd that was 90-percent Turkish, they still fell to a disappointing 2-0 defeat.

A goal from Aaron Ramsey just before halftime and a tap-in for Connor Roberts – both created by Gareth Bale – was more than enough to give the Welsh a fairly comfortable win and give the Turks an uphill task to qualify for the knockout phase.

Now their task is very straightforward: they must beat Switzerland in front of what will be another partizan Turkish crowd in Baku, and hope that three points will be enough to take them through to the round of 16 as one of the four ‘best’ third-placed teams. In order to achieve this though, they simply have to improve in all areas of the pitch but most significantly in defense where their minus-five goal difference could yet come back to haunt them.

Veteran coach Senol Gunes, in his second spell in charge, has put together a good, young team who qualified comfortably for this tournament – conceding just three goals and keeping eight clean sheets –  but desperately needs his men to rediscover that rich vein of qualifying form if they are to prolong their stay in this tournament.

Switzerland vs Turkey Best Bet

With this being a winner-takes-all game, there is every prospect of this being an end-to-end thriller, especially with both defenses struggling to cope with the intensity of tournament soccer. While neither expects to get to the very late stages, both would have hoped to make it to the knockout phase of this tournament and so we should expect fireworks.

The Baku crowd has a big part to play too in what amounts to a knockout game, with the Turks sure to be roared on and encouraged to attack, and this could be a deciding factor. The Turks have under-delivered massively so far but with such young talent in their squad, I simply cannot see them losing three on the bounce, especially after being in such good form.  So, for me, there is value here in the away win.

Pick: Turkey to win (+410)
