  • First home game for surprise new Spurs chief Jose Mourinho
  • Londoners can clinch last 16 place after firing of Pochettino
  • Greek side have suffered three straight defeats in Group B and are long +619 underdogs to achieve victory on Matchday 5

Tottenham Hotspur’s Champions League Group B clash with Olympiakos next Tuesday will become the focus of massive interest as Jose Mourinho’s first home game in charge of his new club.

He can make an impact quickly by securing qualification for the knockout stage with a victory for last season’s beaten finalists.

Former Manchester United, Chelsea, Real Madrid , Internazionale and Porto coach Mourinho replaced sacked Mauricio Pochettino in north London on Wednesday.

His introduction to the crowd at Spurs’ glittering new stadium is set up to be a comfortable and productive one, with Tottenham rated as -312 favorites to win the Matchday 5 fixture on November 26, at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, London, at 3.00 pm EST.

Opening Derby Date for ‘The Special One’

Mourinho – nicknamed “The Special One” – is set to take charge of the side for the first time in the Premier League London derby fixture away against West Ham United on Saturday, November 23, at London Stadium, at 7:30 am EST.

Group leaders Bayern Munich have already secured their passage to the knockout phase.

Second-placed Tottenham have recovered well from the 7-2 thrashing by Bayern on Matchday 2 which helped hasten the departure of Argentine Pochettino after five years in charge.

Since then, Spurs have twice crushed Red Star Belgrade by 5-0 at home and then 4-0 away.

They now have seven points. Olympiakos have just one point from their 2-2 draw at home against Tottenham on Matchday 1.

Mourinho will be eager to nail his new club’s place in the last 16 in this fixture because the final game on Matchday 6 is a tough assignment away in Munich.

They were subsequently beaten away at Red Star Belgrade, at home by Bayern and then again in Germany by the Munich giants.

They will advance with a win. In the event of a draw against the Greek side next week, Spurs will progress if Red Star Belgrade fail to win at home against Bayern.

Double UCL Winner as Boss

The Portuguese Mourinho, 56, has an impressive managerial record in European football. He won the UCL with Porto in 2003-04 and triumphed again with Inter Milan in 2009- 2010.

He also lifted the Europa League while in command of Manchester United in 2016/17. He won its forerunner, the UEFA Cup, with Porto in 2002-03.

It was Tottenham’s domestic form which cost Pochettino his job rather than their recovery in Europe.

They were 14th in the EPL at the time of Pochettino’s departure with only three wins, four draws and five defeats from 12 fixtures.

They have not won any silverware since 2008.

Mourinho has been recruited because of his proven track record of winning trophies even though his brand of carefully-planned football is at odds with Tottenham’s historic reputation for flair and flamboyance.
