  • Matchday 5 of the 2019 UEFA Europa League on Thursday
  • Gunners struggling in EPL but in charge of Group F
  • Feyenoord nicely priced favorites to beat Rangers

It’s Matchday 5 of the Europa League on Thursday, November 28th. As always, this competition offers the bettors a different dynamic to the Champions League and in doing so offers some good value.

We’ll take a look at three of the evening’s top fixtures to try and identify some value for the bettors.

Europa League Group F – Arsenal vs Eintracht Frankfurt

Eintracht Frankfurt +0.5 (-104) +235 U 3 (-117) +1200

It’s been a tough season in north London. Unai Emery’s men have struggled to make an impact on the Premier League’s top six and the manager’s job is under serious threat. So far, the Europa League has proved to be a pleasant distraction for the Gunners though and they look to be coasting through Group F and into the knockout stages.

Arsenal will be hoping for a similar outcome to opening day in the Europa League when they went to Frankfurt and won 3-0. On a night when Emery picked a youthful line-up, goals from Joe Willock, Bukayo Saka and Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang got the Gunners off to a flying start.

Home wins over Standard Liege and Vitoria SC followed but the warning signs were evident against Vitoria, where it took two late Arsenal goals to secure them victory. The problems continued in the reverse fixture in Portugal when the Gunners could only draw with the group’s bottom team.

Frankfurt are locked in a battle with Liege for second spot, with whom they share a 2-0-2 record, and know they need a win at the Emirates to stay in the hunt for a place in the knockout phase. An early lead for the Germans would make for an interesting evening at the Emirates, which has been feisty and unsettled of late, and I can see Frankfurt’s greater need for the points being decisive here.

My pick: Frankfurt (+233)

Europa League Group K – Sporting Braga vs Wolves

Team Spread Moneyline Total Odds to Win Group K
Sporting Braga pk -0.5 (+119) +131 O 2.0, 2.5 (-111) -165
Wolverhampton Wanderers pk +0.5 (-139) +200 U 2.0, 2.5 (-109) +125
Draw N/A +182 N/A N/A

Wolves need only a point here to virtually secure their place in the knockout phase, but will be made to work hard by the group leaders, whose 10 points to date look already to be enough for them to progress.

Three wins and a draw for the Portuguese team, which included a win in Wolverhampton on opening day, have set them up for comfortable qualification to the knockout phase. Eight goals for and just four against tells the story of Braga’s campaign perfectly, and they will head into the Wolves game with clear heads and confidence.

Despite losing at home to Braga on opening day, Wolves have enjoyed a good campaign. Although the Europa League impacted on their Premier League form in the early weeks of the season – during which manager Nuno Espirito Santo struggled to balance his resources – they have now found the right balance and have started to look like the Wolves of last season.

For me, the draw looks favourite here. Wolves only need a point and a draw for Braga maintains their place at the top of the group.

My pick: Braga and Wolves to draw (+182)

Europa League Group G – Feyenoord vs Rangers Odds

Team Spread Moneyline Total Odds to Win Group G
Feyenoord pk (-126) +135 O 2.5, 3.0 (+106) +1200
Rangers pk (+106) +170 U 2.5, 3.0 (-126) +120
Draw N/A +210 N/A N/A

Feyenoord are currently bottom of Group G but it’s such a tight one, they are still in a position to qualify.

In fact, wins for the Dutch over Rangers and for Porto against Young Boys in Switzerland would see all four teams tied on seven points going into Matchday 6. The flip side is that wins for Rangers and Young Boys will clinch their respective places in the knockout stages.

So, it will be a massive night in Rotterdam, with Rangers’ massive travelling support making for a thunderous atmosphere in the De Kuip. It won’t be one for the faint-hearted.

Goals haven’t been plentiful in this group – Young Boys top Group G but have scored just six times – and so this one is almost certain to be low-scoring. An early goal either way could be decisive but Rangers have yet to win away in the group and the incentive here for the Dutch is massive.

My pick: Feyenoord to win (+135)
