French Open Women’s Singles Odds & Preview: Swiatek Looks to Defend Her Title

The second Grand Slam of the year is here, and the French Open is back to being played in it’s usual spot. After the pandemic pushed the 2020 tournament to late September, early October, Roland Garros is back, and Iga Swiatek will look to defend her title she won just seven months ago.

World No. 3 Simona Halep has withdrawn from the tournament, but most of the notable names are back and will be competing in Paris, making for an exciting couple of weeks. Defending champion Swiatek will be heading in as the strong favorite with +275 odds, but is the soon to be 20-year old the best bet to win it all?

Below we have the odds for the Top 20 players to win the tournament outright, as well as what you might be able to expect from this year’s tournament.

Defending Champion

It was just October of last year when Polish teenager Swiatek captured her maiden major title, and became the first player from her country to win a Grand Slam singles title.

Heading into this year’s Grand Slam, Swiatek actually benefited heavily from the Halep’s withdrawal, earning the No. 8 seed after Halep announced she wouldn’t be competing. This now means that Swiatek won’t be facing a Top 8 seed before the quarterfinals. Had Halep not withdrawn and Swiatek was in the No. 9 spot, she would have faced a high seed as early as the Round of 16.

The 19-year old is heading into France with a 19-5 record on the year. She’s coming off a title win just last week at the Italian Open, bringing her 2021 clay record to 8-1.

Swiatek will look to show that her 2020 impressive run at the tournament was not just a one-off.

World No. 1

Ashleigh Barty is entering the French Open as one of the favorites to win, just behind Swiatek. She’s been given the No. 1 seed, but has been handed a tough draw.

The 2019 champion heads into the tournament with a 27-5 record on the year, including a 13-3 record on clay. Her two best clay results this year include a finals appearance in Madrid, and a title at the Stuttgart Open.

Others to Watch

In the early rounds of a Grand Slam, there’s always the possibility of upsets, and this tournament is no different.

Youngster Coco Gauff is heading into Roland Garros having had some impressive showings as of late. She was defeated by Swiatek in the semifinals of the Italian Open, and is coming off a finals win at the Parma Challenger tournament this past weekend.

She’ll open her tournament up against Aleksandra Krunic, and it’s possible she faces Barty in the fourth round, should she win her matches up until that point. She could be a real problem for Barty, with her recent form and finishes.

Not someone who would upset as she is a top favorite to win outright, but keep an eye out Aryna Sabalenka this tournament. She is arguably in her best form, and has the opportunity to break out this tournament. She had a third round exit at the French Open last year, but has followed up with an 11-2 clay record and 25-7 overall record this year. She was a finalist at Stuttgart and won the Madrid Open where she defeated Barty.

Best Bet

I think going into this tournament you might have to give Swiatek the chance to repeat. If not, Sabalenka or Barty could be a good bet too. Barty’s quarter is much tougher than Swiatek or Sabalenka. She is the World No. 1 for a reason, but she’ll have some tough opponents she’ll have to beat on her way to the finals.

The tricky thing with Swiatek is last year she came in with zero pressure, this year it’s the complete opposite. All eyes are on her.

Best Bet: Swiatek (+275)

Longer Shot: Sabalenka (+800)
