Pliskova on the Rise

It was only a week ago that Karolina Pliskova’s French Open odds were listed at +1800 across a number of top online sportsbooks. Fast forward to this week, after she won the Italian Open, her odds have shortened significantly to an average of +1300, with oddsmakers listing her at +1200.

For the past three seasons, Pliskova has consistently been in the mix when it comes to clay, and it’ll be interesting to see if she can continue this momentum into Paris.

Ostapenko Fading Quickly

On the other side of things, Jelena Ostapenko has seen her average French Open odds fade quickly from +2300 last week to +5300 as of May 20th.

What’s interesting about Ostapenko is despite not having the most successful 2019 season so far, she has had huge success on clay. In 2017 she defeated clay court specialist and eventual 2018 champion, Simona Halep, to take home the trophy at Roland Garros.

Even though her odds aren’t the greatest, and have been slipping, don’t ever count someone out who’s been there before.

Where to Put Your Money

The one factor that has stayed constant over the past two weeks in French Open odds has been Simona Halep’s chances to win at Roland Garros. Her odds have changed slightly over the course of the past month or so, but even with loses in the past two tournament, she is still the favorite to take it all.

Dubbed a clay court specialist, Halep has been to the French Open women’s single final in three of the last five years and held the no. 1 ranking in the world until Naomi Osaka took it in January.

A significant change in Halep’s game since last year would be the dismissal of her coach who helped lead her to her championship. This is not saying that she is incapable of repeating her championship without him, as she has had a very successful 2019 so far. But there has been times where she wasn’t quite able to seal the deal.

Despite there only being five women who have successfully defended their French Open title, all things are pointing to Halep joining that list.

Pick: Simona Halep (+400)
