Giorgi Defeats Comeback Queen Pegula
Given how many times Jessica Pegula had to come back from the brink of defeat in Montreal this week, it wasn’t unexpected that she would run out of steam.
And it happened in Saturday’s semifinal against Giorgi. Early on, Pegula went off court for a medical timeout to have her upper leg wrapped.
And while she managed to pull out the second set, that was about all she had left in the tank.

Giorgi, looking as fresh as she did when she started the week, won 6-3, 3-6, 6-1.
And with that, she set up the biggest match of a career that began 15 years ago – more than half her life ago.
Pliskova Outhits Top Seed Sabalenka
Pliskova defeated Aryna Sabalenka in the Wimbledon semifinal just a month ago.
This semifinal wasn’t nearly the same kind of barnburner. Sabalenka was less in control of her emotions and her game. Meanwhile, Pliskova just kept trucking along.

It took an hour and 21 minutes to win 6-3, 6-4.
Pliskova had 10 aces, and just two double faults, with a first-serve percentage of 71.2%. That will beat most players, on most days.
Sabalenka was only able to break her once; the Czech broke the Belarusian four times.

The Biggest Match of Giorgi’s Career
This is Pliskova’s 32nd career final. She’s looking for her 17th career title.
But she has won Rome, a slightly higher-grade tournament. She also won a similar tournament in Cincinnati back in 2016.

For Giorgi, this will be the ninth final. She won two of the first eight – one in 2018, and the first in 2015. But all were much smaller tournaments.

Despite their disparity, this has been a surprisingly good matchup for the underdog.
Pliskova Seeking Olympic Revenge
Giorgi upset Pliskova in the first round of Eastbourne on grass, and went onto the semifinals.
And then, a few weeks later, she upset Pliskova again – in similar (but hotter and even more humid) conditions at the Olympic event in Tokyo.
That one was rather routine: 6-4, 6-2.
It’s probably the reason why the odds are so close. The two meetings before that, won by Pliskova, both went three sets.
Both have a similar game plan: short points, quick winners. Pliskova has a better serve. But Giorgi’s is hardly attackable.
And the Italian moves significantly better; she is cat-like around the court.
She needs to avoid a long drop in form; that will only give Pliskova more confidence.
Given their recent matches, and some sense of destiny for Giorgi’s week, it might be an easy call for her to win the whole thing.
Except, suddenly, Pliskova is very much looking like a winner. And yet, Giorgi might be in her head a little bit.
It sets up as a three-setter, but it’s very hard to call.
Best Bet: Over 2.5 sets (+120)
