After a week of upsets in Qatar, we’ve reached the finals, and the two players competing aren’t necessarily the ones you thought would be here. Fifth seed Bautista Agut is not that surprising, but his opponent, Georgian Nikoloz Basilashvili, who upset Roger Federer in the quarterfinals, is.
Bautista Agut also provided an upset in his quarterfinal match, and a dominant performance in the semifinals. He enters this final match as the strong favorite as he looks to capture his second Qatar Open title.

Bautista Agut’s Road to the Finals
The Spaniard’s tournament started when he dropped the first set of his first match to American Reilly Opelka in the Round of 32. He came back to win 4-6, 6-3, 6-4.
In his quarterfinal match, he saw himself up against No. 1 seed Dominic Thiem. In a long, gruelling match that went three sets, he was able to defeat Thiem 7(7)-6(3), 2-6, 6-4.
After his quarterfinal win, he moved on to play defending champion Andrey Rublev, who is one of the best players on tour right now. But Bautista Agut didn’t give the Russian anytime to get comfortable, winning 6-3. 6-3.
This was actually Rublev’s first singles match of the week, after receiving two walkovers from his Round of 16 and quarterfinal opponents. That could have been a large factor in the outcome of this match.
But nonetheless, Bautista Agut picked up right where he left off the day before when he defeated Thiem. He was strong and clean with his offense, and Rublev’s errors helped Bautista Agut secure the win.
Basilashvili’s Road to the Finals
The 29-year old has had himself quite the tournament so far, which includes upsetting Roger Federer in the quarterfinals. Much like his final opponent, Basilashvili started his tournament by dropping the first set of his first match. He came back to win 2-6, 6-4, 6-4, against John Millman.
He then didn’t have any trouble until he saw Federer. Basilashvili then again dropped the first set and had to piece together a come from behind win to defeat the Swiss 3-6, 6-1, 7-5.

Basilashvili was able to carry that momentum into his semifinal match where he beat American Taylor Fritz 7(7)-6(3), 6-1, in just over an hour.
Heading into the finals, Basilashvili will look to capture his first Qatar Open title.

Best Bet
I think the obvious best bet here is Bautista Agut. Both players have been playing exceptional tennis, but the Spaniard has been the more consistent one.
Both on offense and defense, Bautista Agut has shown composure and consistency. His serve has been big for him all tournament, and I expect it to continue into the final match. He’s also done a great job at setting the pace the last couple of matches, and as long as he keeps his composure and unforced errors down, he should be able to win his second Qatar Open.
