The final tuneup before the FedEx Cup playoffs commence is at the Wyndham Championship, where players will be jockeying for position inside the 125 spots designated to compete for the FedEx Cup and the $15 million dollars that goes along with it.

2011 champion Webb Simpson is the favorite to win his third PGA Tour title this season with Brooks Koepka closely following – despite his poor finish at the PGA Championship.

In this article we’ll explore which players have the best chance of being the leader after day one of the Wyndham, which to nobody’s surprise is expected to be Simpson or Koepka.

Odds taken August 11th

The forecast will be almost identical the entire day, with there being a risk of thunderstorms for both the morning and afternoon wave of players with very little wind to contend with, and the possibility of some rain.

The only potential benefit from playing in the morning is the exact same as it is every week – less bumpy greens with fewer players chewing them up with less traffic.

Harris English Has Been Quietly Solid

In seven of his last eight tournaments, Harris English has finished inside the top 20. Most importantly for the purposes of this bet, he’s third in first round scoring average this season, with all of those strong finishes kicked off with opening rounds no worse than 70, with his best round being a 65.

In his 16 events this season, his worst opening round was a 72. He’s playing within friendly confines, as he’s never missed a cut in six times at the event. Plus, he’ll be putting Bermuda greens, which is the surface he excels on the most – gaining strokes in eleven of his last 14 rounds on Bermuda.

Pick: Harris English (+4500)

Brendon Todd Has Been Firing on all Cylinders

Brendon Todd is another name that has been topping leaderboards of late, as he was the first round co-leader at the PGA Championship last week. Like English, he’s very strong in first round scoring average, ranking in a tie for fifth.

With the exception of a poor round of 75 getting out of the blocks at the Memorial Tournament, here are Todd’s first round scores in his seven other events this year – 65, 64, 68, 66, 68, 69, 68.

Twice a winner this season, with a tour leading four 54-hole leads plus third in driving accuracy and eighth in putting, and he’s gained strokes in 14 of his last 18 rounds on Bermuda grass.

Pick: Brendon Todd (+5500)

Past Winner Ryan Moore Rounding Into Form

In his last tournament, Ryan Moore held a share of the first round lead at the Barracuda Championship, before posting his second straight T-12th finish. At the 3M Open he was in a tie for third after the first day as well.

In those two tournaments he was money hitting greens, ranking T-1st at the 3M Open and T-3rd at the Barracuda Championship, which will be critical to go low at toothless Sedgefield Country Club.

He won the 2009 Wyndham Championship title for his first career PGA Tour victory, and has posted two more top-10 results since then at this track. Two years ago, he found himself in a tie for second after day one.

He’s a respectable 39th in first round scoring average which could lead to him taking the early lead.

Pick: Ryan Moore (+5500)

Scott Stalling an Intriguing Dart Throw

Like Brendon Todd, Scott Stallings is T-5th in first round scoring average this season, with his most recent result being a tie for fifth at the Barracuda Championship.

In his run of seven straight made cuts, he also posted a T-6th at the Travelers Championship.

Four tournaments ago at the Rocket Mortgage Classic, he co-led after 18 holes, and in 15 of his last 20 rounds, he’s gained strokes on Bermuda.

You can do a whole lot worse and at +9000 odds, it could be a huge payout should Stallings go low again.

Pick: Scott Stallings (+9000)
