  • The Miami Heat are 1-point favorites when they visit the Phoenix Suns Friday night
  • Phoenix has dropped four straight

Two teams that were legit contenders for the NBA title a season ago are anything but when they meet Friday night.

The Miami Heat (20-19, 9-11 away), will try to send the hometown Phoenix Suns (20-19, 14-5 home) to their fifth straight loss. Their latest defeat to the Cavaliers gave them one more L than they had all of last season, when they led the NBA with a 64-18 record.

They’re still without all-star Devin Booker (groin), who’s shelved for at least three more weeks.

Miami, an Eastern Conference finalist last year, is hanging around in a play-in spot at eight. They’re coming off a loss to the LeBron-less Lakers last time out.

This one gets underway from the Footprint Center at 10pm ET, in a game you can see live on ESPN.

The NBA odds have the visiting Heat as 1-point favorites with a total set at 216.

Despite their recent struggles, Phoenix does have a sparkling 14-5 home mark, tied for the third most home wins in the West. Miami is just 9-11 on the road — then again, there are only three teams in the East with a winning away record.

Miami Heat Betting Analysis

This will be the fifth and final stop on a road trip for the Heat, who will try to finish with a winning record after dropping a 112-109 loss to the Lakers.

Bam Adebayo was the driving force for the Heat, as he potted 30 points to go along with 13 rebounds and three assists. It’s the third straight game the all-star center has gone for 30+.

Jimmy Butler added 27 points, four rebounds and four assists, but the Heat could not find the range in this one, hitting just 8-for-29 from three-point range.

They’re down a sharpshooter as well, as Duncan Robinson suffered a finger injury against LA, and will need surgery. He’ll be out at least a month. Another wing, Caleb Martin (quad) is questionable for Friday.

That won’t help a team that is already the lowest-scoring in the NBA, putting up just 109 points per game. Thankfully, they boast a top-4 scoring defense that surrenders 109.5 points per contest.

Miami is susceptible from distance, however, as teams fire at a 36.9% clip, the third-worst mark in the league.

Phoenix Suns Betting Outlook

Phoenix has just a single win in five games since Book got hurt on Christmas day, and they have only two wins in 10 games without him on the year. To be fair, the Suns had been sliding prior to Booker’s injury, as they’ve lost 12 of their last 16.

They struggled again offensively in a 90-88 loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers. Chris Paul led the way with 25 points and eight dimes, but he was the only Suns player to top the 20-point plateau.

Overall, the Suns shot 39.5% from the field and a dim 10-for-28 from three-point range (35.7%). This is a team that usually hits at a 38.2% clip, tied for the 3rd-best mark in the NBA.

This was one game after Phoenix registered their lowest point total of the year, getting crunched 102-83 by the Knicks.

A middle-of-the-pack scoring unit (113.5 points), the Suns are putting up just 100.4 points per game in their last five. They’re shooting 44.3% from the field. To put that into context, the Grizzlies lead the NBA in field goal defense, holding teams to that exact figure.

Heat vs Suns Best Bet

The Heat are literally one of the worst bets in basketball, going 14-23-2 against the spread this season. Only the Dallas Mavericks have a worse mark. Meanwhile, the Suns are 11-8-0 ATS at home this year.

While Phoenix has dominated this matchup, going 5-1 ATS in their last six head-to-head meetings, the Heat are 12-2 ATS in their last 14 at the Suns’ house.

Even though the over is 4-1 in the last five Phoenix-venue matchups, all signs point to under.

The Heat are wrapping a grueling road trip, while the Suns are laboring without Booker, and also won’t have Cam Payne (foot), one of the few shot creators and makers on a roster short of them.
