Alabama Outlook

Alabama won a thriller against Houston as freshman guard JD Davison scored the game’s final points on a putback dunk with 33 seconds left. Houston had three shots at a game-winning field goal but failed to convert.

Kyler Edwards missed a three and the Cougars missed two tip-ins. Houston argued that Davison should have been called for goaltending on its final attempt, but the officials declined to review the play.

Sophomore forward Juwan Gary had what might be his coming out game as he scored a career-high 19 points to lead Alabama. He is averaging 9.9 points and 5.7 rebounds this season.

Junior guard Jaden Shackelford had another big game with 18 points on 5-for-7 shooting from three-point range and eight rebounds. He has knocked down 16 of 24 (66.7%) attempts from distance over the last three games.

Shackelford has season averages of 19.1 points and 6.9 rebounds. He is shooting 45.6% on threes.

Junior guard Jahvon Quinerly added 17 points and eight assists for Alabama, which is 18th in the nation in offensive rating with 114.8 points per 100 possessions. Quinerly is scoring 15.1 points and distributing 4.3 assists a game.

Davison capped a 10-point, nine-rebound night with his winning dunk and is averaging 9.8 points, 5.2 rebounds and 4.3 assists.

Alabama shot 52.0% (26 of 50) against a Houston defense that was allowing an average of 53.8 points a game coming in. The Crimson Tide also won back-to-back games over top-15 teams for first time since beating Auburn and Tennessee during the 1999-2000 season.

Memphis Outlook

Memphis is on its longest losing streak of Penny Hardaway’s three season as coach. Friday’s defeat also ended the Tigers’ 11-game winning streak at home.

Senior guard Tyler Harris was about the only bright spot against Murray State as he scored a season-high 15 points to top Memphis. Harris spent the first two seasons of his college career at Memphis transferred to Iowa State before last season then came back to Memphis this year.

Harris had scored 15 points combined in the previous five games.

Highly touted freshman center Jalen Duran broke out of his scoring slump with 14 points and five rebounds, He equaled his point total from the previous three games.

Duren has been a force inside as he is averaging 7.8 points and 3.0 blocked shots a game.

Duren has formed a strong combination with senior forward De’Andre Williams, who is scoring 10.2 points and pulling down 5.1 rebounds a game.

Freshman guard Emoni Bates leads the Tigers in scoring with an 11.2 average. However, he has been a bit of a disappointment since arriving in Memphis considered the top recruit in the nation in his high school class.

Bates did have three steals as Memphis forced Murray State into 17 turnovers. However, the Racers shot 48.3% (14 of 29) on three-pointers, which helped them erase the Tigers’ 40-28 halftime lead.

Alabama vs Memphis Prediction

Memphis entered the season with realistic Final Four hopes and still might get there. However, Hardaway says his players are disconnected. It will be hard to fix that problem against an Alabama team that is rolling.

The Pick: Alabama -3.5 (-106)
