Former college basketball heavyweights who are now at the rear of the Big East Conference meet on Monday, January 16th when the Villanova Wildcats (8-10, 5-12 ATS) host the Georgetown Hoyas (5-13, 6-12 ATS) at the William B. Finneran Pavilion.

It’s an early noon ET weekday matchup on Martin Luther King Day in the United States. Following a 16-point victory when these two sides met just under two weeks ago, Villanova are 13.5-point home favorites to dispose of Georgetown once again.

After a decent start to the season where they went .500 through their first 10 games, Georgetown have come unraveled losing eight in a row. Comparatively, their opponents haven’t fared much better, going 1-5 straight up since the Christmas break with that lone victory coming against the Hoyas.

Hoyas Look to Snap 8-Game Losing Streak

Racing out with five wins in the first month of the year, Patrick Ewing’s squad looked like they had made a noticeable improvement after garnering just six victories total last season.

All that good will has gone by the wayside during the last month as they’ve fallen to eight consecutive opponents.

Defense has been a particular sore spot for this side. In giving up an average of 77.7 points per game, they are in the bottom 10% of all teams in the nation in points allowed.

During their current eight game slide, it’s been even worse, with the opposition scoring 83.3 points per contest.

Nobody is expecting Ewing to make the Hoyas contenders in the odds to win the NCAA tournament, like they were consistently in his playing days, but there was some hope that they could get to double digit victories this year and climb their way out of the basement of the Big East.

A win during the holiday against one of their big rivals would go a long way in restoring some confidence to one of college basketball’s most historic programs.

Villanova Wildcats Betting Trends

It has been quite the fall from grace in the Wildcats’ first season since Jay Wright retired. Undoubtedly, they were going to miss Wright, who led them to two NCAA titles during his 21-year tenure at the helm for Villanova.

After going 30-8 last year in Wright’s final season, the Wildcats have struggled to an 8-10 record under Kyle Neptune, the new man in charge.

They got off to a brutal 2-5 start, but that was without prized freshman Cam Whitmore who made his return to the Wildcats lineup on December 3rd after sitting out the first month with a thumb injury.

Since the 6’7, 230 pound forward stepped back into the lineup, Villanova are a much more respectable 6-5. In addition, Neptune eased Whitmore back into the mix, but in his last three games, he’s gotten 30 minutes or more of court time and average 18 points per game while shooting a collective 58.3% from the floor.

This rivalry has been all Villanova in recent years. It’s easy to understand why their double digit chalk in the college basketball odds. On top of the fact that they’re simply the better side, they’ve beaten Georgetown in seven of the last eight head-to-head meetings.
