Can Virginia Tech Continue Hot Streak?

Although the Hokies didn’t exactly finish in a great spot in the ACC, they ended the season on a ridiculous hot streak. Virginia Tech won 11 of their final 13 games and after Friday’s semifinals victory, Mike Young’s team most likely has a berth in March Madness. But if the Hokies can pull off the upset here, it would be their first ACC title in program history.

VT possesses a lot of depth and we saw just that against UNC, with seven different guys playing at least 18 minutes. Offensively, big man Keve Aluma was a force, dropping 18 points whole snatching four rebounds. Darius Maddox absolutely shined off the bench, pouring in a game-high 20 points.

Their defense came through big, holding the Tarheels to a 37% clip from the field and an atrocious 12% from three-point land. With Duke boasting one of the best starting fives in the nation, the Hokies must be sharp once again on Saturday.

Coach K Gets His Shot at One More ACC Title

After an upset loss to North Carolina in his final home game, Coach K has responded and guided Duke all the way to the ACC title game. The #7 Blue Devils have played well in this tournament thus far, taking down a Buddy Boeheim-less Syracuse in the quarterfinals then beating Miami by four points on Friday.

Projected NBA lottery pick Paolo Banchero continued his terrific campaign with an impressive showing of 18 points, 11 rebounds, and four assists. AJ Griffin made his presence felt as well, scoring 21 and grabbing seven boards. He drained three crucial free throws in the final 20 seconds to seal the deal.

Duke really imposed their will on the Hurricanes in the paint, controlling the boards 38-27 and outscoring Miami by 10 inside. This was a team that previously handed the Blue Devils a defeat earlier in the season, so it was certainly not an easy win for Coach K’s squad. Duke won the ACC after going 16-4 in conference play and entered this tourney as a clear favorite.

Duke also beat Virginia Tech 76-65 in December by 11 points. However, they won’t be taking the Hokies for granted, who blew out a UNC team who had their way with the Blue Devils just a week ago. Their entire starting five averages 10.1 points or more and it’ll be very important this 5th ranked offense brings it in every way imaginable on Saturday.

Virginia Tech vs Duke Prediction

Duke is a very solid team and the thing that sticks out to me here is their ability to control the paint. Virginia Tech meanwhile was outplayed in that category against UNC but thankfully, the Tarheels couldn’t drain a jumper. I  believe the Blue Devils will cover here and hand Coach K his 16th ACC Championship ahead of the Big Dance.

Pick: Duke -6 (-110)
