Elsewhere, the Utah Utes knocked off Lincoln Riley’s USC, converting a last minute two-point conversion to upset the Trojans.

Very quietly, the most consistent team through six weeks of the season may be Michigan. At +1600 to win the National Championship, the Wolverines may represent the best value bet on the National Championship odds board. Ohio State remains the National Championship favourite at +170, with Georgia nipping at their heels at +190 odds.

Triumphant Tennessee Downs Alabama

Nearly 100,000 screaming fans stormed the field in Knoxville as Tennessee kicker Chase McGrath’s 40-yard knuckle ball passed through the uprights as time expired.

Tennessee quarterback Hendon Hooker drove his team 45 yards in 18 seconds to set up a game winning field goal. The Volunteers fast paced offense jumped out to a 21-7 first quarter lead and never looked back. Hooker through for 385 yards in the win and tossed five touchdowns to Jalin Hyatt, who set a program record for touchdown receptions in one game.

Josh Heupel’s elite offense was all gas and no brakes on Saturday to lead his Tennessee team to victory. With a couple more performances like Saturday afternoon in Knoxville, Hendon Hooker will be staking his claim as a favorite in the Heisman Trophy odds.

With the win, Tennessee snapped a 15-game losing streak to the Crimson Tide. Saturday’s contest was the highest scoring showdown in the history of the rivalry, and the total of 101 points was tied for the most scored in a top-10 SEC game.

The Vols saw their National Championship odds jump from +5000 to +2000. Alternatively, it’s back to the drawing board for Alabama, which saw its National Championship odds fall from +250 to +450.

While they were once afterthoughts in this year’s National Championship race,  the Volunteers’ path to the College Football Playoff is now clear. A victory over no. 1 Georgia on November 5th would almost certainly see the Volunteers become National Championship favorites. Just as we all predicted.

Utah Ends USC’s National Championship Hopes

USC’s luck ran out on Saturday night.

Utes quarterback Cameron Rising simply outgunned Caleb Williams and the Trojans. Rising threw for 415 yards and two touchdowns while adding 60 yards and three scores on the ground. The Trojans’ defense was no match for the onslaught of the junior from nearby Ventura, California. Tight end Dalton Kincaid was seemingly open all night, as Rising connected with his star pass-catcher over and over again. Kincaid finished with a whopping 16 catches for 234 yards and a score while looking like a surefire future NFL draft pick.

USC’s defense entered the contest leading the country in takeaways but forced just one on the night and surrendered touchdowns on 5 of Utah’s last six drives. After USC took at 42-35 lead with 6:15 left on the clock, Rising led his men straight down the field. The star pivot then converted on fourth & goal himself with a one yard touchdown, before punching in the game-winning two-point conversion to cement the victory.

Unfortunately for the Pac-12, USC’s loss leaves UCLA as the conference’s only undefeated team. Unless Chip Kelly’s Bruins can run the table, the Pac-12 will likely miss out on the College Football Playoff, for the sixth straight season.
