The 2021 College Football Season begins for both the North Carolina Tar Heels and Virginia Tech Hokies Friday night in Blacksburg, Virginia. The game is sold out days ago so the Tar Heels can expect a raucous environment. It will be made even louder by the fact that for the first time in 56 years, Lane Stadium will be offering beer and seltzers. It’s party time.

It’s going to take more than beers and seltzers for the Hokies to slow down the North Carolina offense – whom they gave up 56 points to last season. Bettors seem to think it can be done, as the Tar Heels opened as 6.5-point favorites only to be bet down to -5.5 at the moment. Our own Chris Amberley thinks we may even see our fair share of points in this one.

Player props are always a good idea and they may be the way to go with this one. DraftKings has given us a few to choose from on either side.

Braxton Burmeister is a Freak

We can expect offensive output from North Carolina, but the issue with betting it is the fact that it’s baked into the line. Sam Howell’s passing yards at 285.5 seems low, but even in last year’s game when the Tar Heels put up 56 points, he only threw for 257 yards. It may be time to pivot and look at Virginia Tech’s quarterback, Braxton Burmeister.

Bruce Feldman just named Burmeister to his annual “Freaks” list, and that’s exactly what the former Oregon Duck is. Burmeister is a dual-threat but my guess is the Hokies want to keep him on the field so maybe a few less runs could be in order.  If that happens, and the Tar Heels are able to hang points on Virginia Tech, Burmeister will be in the perfect situation to go over his passing yards total.

The Pick: Braxton Burmeister Over 187.5 passing yards (-115)

Tayvion Robinson Enters the Chat

If Burmeister is going to go over 187.5 passing yards, somebody is going to have to catch the ball. Virginia Tech has a few options, but one stands out more than the rest. Tayvion Robinson finished last season four yards short of 1000 for the season, and one look at his highlight film will tell you that won’t happen again this season.

When betting receiving yard totals we want to bet guys that can take it to the house at anytime. Getting the total one one catch is called the jackpot and hitting it often is the only way to go. Robinson fits the mold for a guy that can do that. He had a 60-yarder from Burmeister in the final game of the season last year while finishing that game with 98 yards on five receptions. I think we will see more of the same tonight.

  • The Pick: Tayvion Robinson Over 53.5 receiving yards
