  • The Cleveland Browns crushed the Baltimore Ravens 40-25 in Week 4
  • Nick Chubb had 165 rushing yards in Week 4 with three touchdowns
  • The 49ers are coming off a bye for their Week 5 matchup with Cleveland

The Cleveland Browns got a big win on Sunday as they hammered the Baltimore Ravens 40-25. It was their most complete effort of the season. In Week 5, they head to San Francisco to take on the undefeated 49ers. Are the Browns worth a play as a 3.5-point road dog?

Browns Stomp Ravens

The Browns entered Week 4 on the ropes as they were coming off a bad loss to the Los Angeles Rams and were heavily criticized in the media. Another loss would have put them at 1-3 and really made their push for the playoffs a tall order. Instead, they showed up and played their best game of the season.

Cleveland was about a 7.5-point dog going into the game but at no point were the Ravens covering. Their defense – even with several parts missing in the secondary – held Lamar Jackson in check while the offense had their best game of the season.

Baker Mayfield was 20-of-30 for 342 yards, a touchdown and an interception while Nick Chubb had 20 carries for 165 yards and three touchdowns. What’s crazy is the Browns won big while getting just two catches for 20 yards out of Odell Beckham Jr. That’s impressive.

Can the Browns Carry It Over?

There’s no question that the Browns had a resounding win on Sunday but can they carry it over or will they revert back to the team that was offensively challenged in Weeks 1, 2 and 3? The 49ers clearly have one of the league’s best defenses and they’re fresh off a bye. They’ll be ready to go in this game.

The Browns got a boost with three turnovers on Sunday and another series where the Ravens turned it over on downs. The 49ers are coming off a very sloppy game where they won after turning it over five times, so they’re likely to be very careful with the football in this game. The Browns may not get that type of edge again.

What’s the Best Bet?

It’s hard to win twice in a row on the road in the NFL. This is a very broad generalization but typically, teams will play well one game and poorly another. With the Browns bringing their best effort of the season against a rival, I can’t expect them to play this good for a second straight week.

There’s also the question as to how good the Ravens actually are. Baltimore did beat the Miami Dolphins handily and then edged the Arizona Cardinals. After that, they were handled by the Kansas City Chiefs in a game that really wasn’t as close as the final score suggests. Maybe they’re not as good as we thought.

As for the 49ers, they have three wins over so-so teams – Tampa Bay, Cincinnati and Pittsburgh – but I like the way they’ve looked so far. Their defense has been among the best in the NFL. If the Browns again have absences in the secondaries, I don’t think they win this game.

The other concern is that Cleveland hadn’t run the ball well in the first three weeks and now they’re going on the road to face a rush defense that’s only giving up 75.0 rushing yards per game. I don’t think the 49ers will allow them as much room to run as Baltimore did this past weekend.

Overall, I like the 49ers in this game. The Browns are coming off a big win over a rival and now they have to travel across the country to face a fresh team off a bye. I expect the 49ers to win and cover in this spot.

I would wait until later in the week as this line should close at San Francisco -3. For more useful Cleveland Browns vs San Francisco 49ers odds & stats, check out the link for the upcoming big game.
