After watching five weeks of NFL football this season, it appears that oddsmakers think America’s team will not be making back-to-back postseason appearances.

In the latest edition of the NFL playoff odds, sportsbooks still have the Cowboys with favorable odds to make the playoffs, but they list six other teams in the conference with better odds.

NFC Team Odds to Make NFL Playoffs

Team Odds to Make Playoffs Odds to Miss Playoffs
New Orleans Saints -700 +425
San Francisco 49ers -275 +200
Green Bay Packers -250 +185
Los Angeles Rams -200 +150
Philadelphia Eagles -200 +150
Seattle Seahawks -180 +135
Dallas Cowboys -150 +115

Odds taken 10/09/19.

It was literally just two weeks ago the Cowboys had moved to 3-0 and trailed just the LA Rams and Green Bay Packers in odds to rep the NFC in the postseason. But back-to-back losses to high-end opposition in the form of the Saints and Packers has them at -150, staring up at the Seahawks, Eagles, Rams, Pack, 49ers and Saints in that particular order.

Suffice to say, the NFC is currently loaded.  Let’s see if Dallas is worth a pick at this moment.

Cowboys Need a Quality Win

Perhaps Cowboys nation was feeling themselves a little too much after that wicked 3-0 start. For the first time in a long time, the Cowboys’ offense looked potent and fluid. Of course, it came against lowly opposition in the form of the Eli-led Giants and the Redskins and Dolphins, a pair currently at a combined 0-for-2019.

Given a chance to separate themselves from the rest of the pack, the Cowboys were shut down in New Orleans, putting up just 10 points in a loss. They followed that up with an ugly loss to at home to the Packers, with Dak Prescott throwing three picks. They fell behind 17-0 and never could get close enough to make it a contest.

Dak Prescott 2019 Win-Loss Splits

In 3 Wins
VS
In 2 Losses
74.5% Completion Percentage 63.6%
920 Yards 686
9-2 TD/INT 2-4
10.7 Adjusted Yards Per Attempt 7.09
128.0 QB Rating 79.2

Is it as simple as Prescott needing to perform better? Well, getting healthy along the offensive line will help too, as Tyron Smith has been hampered by an ankle injury that forced him out of the Green Bay game, and their offensive line looked vulnerable.

But what rights any ship is wins – with quality wins the key elixir. If Dallas is going to make the playoffs, they’ll need stack wins against a bevy of winning opponents. Eight of their final 11 games are against teams currently with winning records. And there are some heavies: the Patriots, Rams and Vikings are legit Super Bowl contenders. There’s also usptarts in Detroit, Buffalo and Chicago, as well as two games yet to go with division-rival Philly.

What’s the Best Bet?

Perhaps the most important thing to remember is that almost every NFL team has some sort of Jekyll and Hyde DNA in their system. We’ve already seen the Rams get lit on fire by the Bucs at home. Green Bay had their highest scoring output of the season against Dallas, but Aaron Rodgers hasn’t looked close to a destroyer of worlds.

Injuries have already slowed the Eagles to start the year, and who knows how long Teddy Bridgewater can hold it down, and if Drew Brees will be effective coming off a thumb injury on his throwing hand. Seattle is a few misplays away from potentially being 2-3 instead of 4-1, and the 49ers have laid waste to no one outstanding, though their win in primetime against the Browns was impressive.

When it comes to overall talent, Dallas has that dotted along its starting units. What they’ve shown is that any injuries altering that ecosystem is pretty damaging. This is where an elite QB can mask those kinds of issues, and Prescott’s play will definitely need to be better in the biggies to give the Cowboys a chance.

There’s so much season to go, but I’d highly recommend a wager on Dallas.

The pick: Cowboys to make playoffs (-150)
