  • The New York Jets are 0-6 and the last winless team in the NFL
  • The over/under is 1.5 for the Jets’ season win total
  • The Jets are unlikely to be favored in any of their 10 remaining games

The New York Jets are 0-6 and have often looked like a team headed for an 0-16 season. Yet the oddsmakers have not completely given up hope.

The latest NFL win totals for the Jets are listed at a total of 1.5. Certainly not much but better than a goose egg.

The expectations of the Jets have lowered considerably since Week 1. New York went into the season with an over/under of 6.5 wins.

Really, Really Bad

The Jets have been bad by almost any measure. And it goes beyond being the last winless team in the NFL.

The Jets are last in the league in points per game (12.5), third down conversion percentage (30.23), red zone scoring percentage (23.08), competition percentage (56.68), and passing yards (171.3 per game).

The defense is 29th in points allowed with a 30.8 average.

The Jets are just the sixth team of the Super Bowl era to begin a season with six straight losses and all of them being by eight points or more. They join the 1971 Buffalo Bills, 1984 Houston Oilers, 1991 Indianapolis Colts, 2000 Cincinnati Bengals, and 2013 Jacksonville Jaguars

The Jets’ 12.5 scoring average is less than half the NFL average of 25.5. The last team to go a full season with that distinction was the 2000 Cleveland Browns, who averaged 10.1 compared to the league average of 20.7.

Offering Little Resistance

The closest margin of defeat for the Jets was nine points when they fell 37-28 to the Denver Broncos at home in Week 4.

The Jets were favored in that game by one point. The Jets ended up being on the wrong side of that line just like that they have all season as they are also 0-6 against the spread.

Four of the Jets’ losses have been by at least three touchdowns: 31-13 to the San Francisco Giants in Week 2, 30-10 to the Arizona Cardinals in Week 5, and their latest defeat, 24-0 to the Dolphins at Miami in Week 6.

The last loss might have been the yards with the Jets being shut out. Veteran quarterback Joe Flacco took a 28-yard sack on one play – hard to do — while completing just 21-of-44 passes for 186 yards with one interception.

Darnold Could Return

If there is some good news for the Jets, it is that starting quarterback Sam Darnold might return Sunday for the game against the Buffalo Bills. Darnold has missed the last two games with a sprained AC joint in his right shoulder.

Of course, Darnold has not set the league ablaze in 2020. He has completed 59.4 percent of his attempts for 792 yards and three TDs with four picks.

That has let some Jets’ hoping their team will keep losing so they take Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence with the first pick in next year’s NFL Draft.

The 35-year-old Flacco, meanwhile, has looked his age while subbing. He has an abysmal 51.9 percent completion percentage while throwing for 397 yards and a touchdown with one interception.

Gase Still Has Job

Adam Gase eventually looked like the right choice in his first season as the Jets’ head coach in 2019. The Jets finished strong with six wins in eight games to finish 7-9 following a 1-7 start.

There has been constant speculation about Gase’s job status this season. However, he is still there and management is either hoping Gase can pull off another second-half turnaround or realizes it really doesn’t matter who coaches this team.

If the Jets fire Gase during the season, it could provide an initial boost. The Houston Texans and Atlanta Falcons won their first games right after Romeo Crennel and Raheem Morris took over as interim coaches.

However, it is hard to envision the Jets being very competitive under any coach.

Rough Road Ahead

The Jets still have 10 games left to win those two games needed to go over the total.

Jets’ Remaining Schedule

Week Opponent
7 Buffalo Bills (4-2)
8 at Kansas City Chiefs (5-1)
9 New England Patriots (2-3)
10 Bye
11 at Los Angeles Chargers (1-4)
12 Miami Dolphins (3-3)
13 Las Vegas Raiders (3-2)
14 at Seattle Seahawks (5-0)
15 at Los Angeles Rams (4-2)
16 Cleveland Browns (4-2)
17 at New England Patriots (2-3)

Barring some unforeseen circumstance, the Jets should be the underdog. The only game that looks even perhaps winnable is when the Browns come to the Meadowlands during the holidays, provided Cleveland has followed its usual path and self-imploded by then.

So, 0-16 looks more likely for the J-E-T-S than 2-14. Take the under.
