  • The top four contenders for the NFL MVP remain unchanged following Week 5 action
  • Buffalo Bills QB Josh Allen continues as the +200 favorite
  • Philadelphia Eagles QB Jalen Hurts is now the third betting choice at +550

It’s the same four names atop the contenders for the 2022 NFL MVP Award. And they are separating themselves from the rest of the field.

There was a slight change in the order of these four horsemen, however. Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen continues to reign as the chalk in this betting market. His odds have shortened to +200 from +300 following Week 5 of the season.

Next is QB Patrick Mahomes of the Kansas City Chiefs at +450. Co-third choice a week ago, Philadelphia Eagles QB Jalen Hurts remains at +550. But he’s moved ahead of Baltimore Ravens QB Lamar Jackson. Jackson’s betting line lengthened from +550 to +600 following an uninspiring performance in a 19-17 home-field victory over the Cincinnati Bengals.

After that, the odds grow to +1500 on the fifth betting choice, Los Angeles Chargers QB Justin Herbert.

When the NFL MVP future book was first released in February at NFL betting sites, Mahomes and two-time reigning NFL MVP Aaron Rodgers of the Green Bay Packers were the co-favorites.

It’s Allen vs Mahomes

Week 6 of the NFL season is giving MVP bettors the opportunity to assess the players with the shortest odds in a head-to-head showdown. It’s Allen and the Bills traveling to Arrowhead Stadium to face Mahomes and the Chiefs.

In this battle of top contenders in the AFC Championship odds, if the Bills get the better of the Chiefs, it could just about cement Allen’s claim to the MVP. That’s assuming of course that he’ll be making no major missteps along the way the rest of the season.

It’s the fifth time these two QBs have clashed over the past two years. Mahomes owns a 3-1 record.

Last season, the Bills whipped Kansas City 38-20 in regular-season play. In the AFC Divisional playoffs, the Chiefs edged Buffalo 42-36 in OT. Mahomes was also a 26-17 winner in the 2020 regular season and a 38-24 victor in the 2020 AFC Championship Game.

Hurts At Helm of Unbeaten Eagles

On paper, Eagles QB Jalen Hurts isn’t putting up what would be considered an MVP-like season. He’s seventh in the NFL in passing yardage (1,359) and a distant 23rd in touchdown passes (four).

All he does, it seems, is win. The Eagles are 5-0. They’re the NFL’s last unbeaten team. Favorites in the NFC East odds, this week Philadelphia plays host to the hated Dallas Cowboys.

NFL MVP Movers and Shakers

There wasn’t much action in terms of lines shortening in the NFL MVP odds. The Minnesota Vikings tandem of QB Kirk Cousins (+5000 to +4000) and WR Justin Jefferson (+10000 to +8000) saw their betting lines shorten slightly. Jefferson and Los Angeles Rams receiver Cooper Kupp share the shortest MVP odds for a non-QB.

Sinking ships were in evidence all over following NFL Week 5 action. It’s becoming clear that there won’t be an MVP three-peat for Aaron Rodgers of the Packers. Following Green Bay’s loss to the Giants, Rodgers saw his line in this betting market jump from +2000 to +3500.

Bengals QB Joe Burrow (+2000 to +3500), reigning Super Bowl-winning QB Matthew Stafford of the Los Angeles Rams (+3000 to +6000) and Jacksonville QB Trevor Lawrence (+3500 to +6000) all were slipping further away from the prize.

Will the NFL MVP Be Decided On SNF?

Buffalo continues to hold forth as the favorite in the Super Bowl odds. And while Buffalo is on top, the MVP is Allen’s to lose.

Could he lose it this week, though, on SNF against Mahomes and the Chiefs? If Kansas City puts another beating on Buffalo, arguing that Allen is more valuable than Mahomes will be losing plenty of steam.
