Undefeated Niners Facing Toughest Test of the Season

San Francisco improved its perfect straight up record to 8-0 with last Thursday’s 28-25 win in Arizona, but likely faces its toughest challenge of the season in next Monday night’s Seahawks vs 49ers matchup at Levi’s Stadium.

The 49ers enter Week 10 atop the NFC West, and can extend their lead over second-place Seattle to 2.5 games with a win. But despite their dominance through the first half of the season, with six of their eight victories coming by a margin of at least nine points, the Niners have enjoyed little momentum at the sportsbooks since return from a bye in Week 4.

49ers Regularly Faded in Recent Weeks

San Francisco has been pegged as betting chalk in four of five outings since enjoying its early-season bye, but has seen the betting line make very little movement in its favor during that stretch. Indeed, the Niners saw themselves quickly fade after opening 6-point home chalk in their Week 8 date with Carolina, dipping to 4-point chalk ahead of kickoff in their 51-13 rout of the Panthers that marked their biggest margin of victory in seven years.

An uninspired defensive performance in Arizona last week on Thursday Night Football will not help the 49ers’ efforts to gain any further betting edge on the Seahawks. The Niners surrendered 357 total yards to the Cardinals in their narrowest victory of the season, raising concerns about how they will respond to a Seahawks attack led by NFL MVP candidate Russell Wilson.

The 49ers have posted just two wins in 14 meetings with Seattle since 2012, and have covered in just three of their past 13 meetings

A dismal record in recent meetings with the Seahawks will also work against San Francisco. The 49ers have posted just two wins in 14 meetings with Seattle since 2012, and have covered in just three of their past 13 meetings. But the squad took major steps toward rewriting that narrative with a 26-23 win at home in December of last year as 4-point underdogs, ending a Seattle’s four-game SU win streak.

Seahawks Coming off Character Win over Bucs

Once again, the 49ers must contend with a red-hot Seahawks team coming off an impressive 40-34 overtime win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as 4-point home favorites. With the win, the Seahawks now have firm control of the top NFC wild card, and remain a real threat to challenge the Niners for top spot in the NFC West. But despite averaging over 27.5 points per game this season, Seattle has emerged as a betting disappointment, covering in just four of nine outings.

The Seahawks have struggled against the spread despite being regularly faded ahead of recent contests, most notably in Week 6, when they tumbled to 1-point road underdogs after opening as 1-point chalk in a 32-28 win over the underachieving Cleveland Browns, and a week later, when they slipped from -4 to -3 in a 30-16 home loss to Baltimore.

Wilson’s MVP Performance a Factor

Russell Wilson’s performance against the Buccaneers may be enough to attract wagering on Seattle as the week progresses. The Seahawks pivot tossed for 378 yards while connecting on five touchdown passes for the third time in his NFL career, including an impressive 75-yard drive in overtime capped by a game-winning toss to tight end Jacob Hollister.

And with eight TD passes over his past three appearances against the Niners, and the continued hype surrounding Wilson’s performance, coupled with the arrival of free agent receiver Josh Gordon and the Seahawks likely facing their last best chance to close the gap on San Francisco, that should be enough to move the line in Seattle’s favor over the next seven days.
