  • The San Francisco 49ers have started 8-0, but have one of the toughest remaining schedules
  • On the opposite side of things, the Bengals haven’t won a single game yet, and have turned to rookie QB Ryan Finley
  • Should you wager on 49ers perfection or Bengals ineptitude?

Going undefeated and going winless are polar opposites of one another.

They do however, hold a few similarities as well. For one, they are incredibly difficult to do. Winning every game in the regular season hasn’t been done since the New England Patriots managed to do it during the 2007 season. Going winless on the other hand, has more of a recent history as the Cleveland Browns pulled off the feat back in 2017.

Speaking of the Patriots, they just took their first loss of the season against the Baltimore Ravens. The oddsmakers got that one wrong as the 49ers were expected to lose first.

For the San Francisco 49ers and Cincinnati Bengals, the odds of them both going undefeated and winless respectively, are entirely possible, but unlikely.

Just How Good are the 49ers?

Coming into the 2019 season, the San Francisco 49ers were expected to be good, but not many thought they would be at this level. Their defense has gotten plenty of attention and for good reason.

They are currently holding teams to just 241 yards per game which is good for first in that category.

Quarterbacks have a hard time getting anything done against them. They have only given up 138.1 passing yards per game. Their 12.8 points per game allowed rank them second in the league as well.

While their defense has done the heavy lifting, their offense doesn’t get nearly the level of attention that it should.

They are currently only behind the Baltimore Ravens in terms of rushing yards per game at 171.1. Don’t sleep on the offense as a whole. The 29.4 points per game they are averaging gives them the league’s third best mark in that regard.

The defense deserves all the acclaim but their undefeated mark has been a total team effort.

Biggest Threats to their Undefeated Season?

Through the first half of the year, the 49ers have gotten a few easy teams that they dispatched of. Now that we have reached the second half, their schedule gets noticeably tougher.

Games against the Seahawks (twice), Packers, Ravens, Rams and the Saints will show what this team is really made of.

The combinations of these upcoming games has led to the 49ers having one of the most difficult second half schedules in the entire league.

Back to back games on the road against the Ravens and Saints will be the two games to circle in terms of when this team will taste defeat, but it could come even earlier than that.

The chances of the 49ers going undefeated are slim, but the possibility of the Cincinnati Bengals going winless this year are very much possible.

Will The 49ers Go Undefeated?

No way.

This isn’t to say that they aren’t a good team, when in fact they are. Hell, you can even call them a great one. But there is no way that they will be able to make it through their second half gauntlet without taking a few losses along the way. Go with the oddsmakers on this one and bet against them going undefeated.

Cincinnati Bungles

The Bengals are beyond putrid at this point.

With an average of 15.5 points per game, the Bengals check in at 29th in the league. Their rushing yards per game ranks dead last with 59.5 per game, and their passing game has been just league average, prompting the switch at quarterback.

Do they have a chance at a win the rest of the way?

Bottom feeding teams such as the Jets and Dolphins are on their schedule, and even though they both have just one win to their name, they are still much better teams than the Bengals are at this point.

Even those aforementioned Dolphins managed to sneak out a victory this past Sunday. The bad news for the Bengals is that the odds of them going winless are looking more and more likely with each passing week.

The immediate future looks incredibly bleak for the team from Cincinnati.

Will the Bengals Go Winless?

Absolutely.

The Bengals are far and away the worst team in the NFL right now. If quarterback Andy Dalton was still under center, than he could surely lead this team to at least one win, maybe even two. He is still a very good quarterback, but with rookie Ryan Finley taking over, there is no way that this team will pick up a victory before the end of the season.
