  • Green Bay selected Utah State QB Jordan Love in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft
  • Rodgers is signed with the Packers through the 2023 season when he’ll turn 40

They say that love conquers all but how long will it take for Jordan Love to conquer Aaron Rodgers and be named starting quarterback of the Green Bay Packers?

That’s what a prop wager on the subject is asking. Currently, the odds are favoring later over sooner. Rodgers is the -150 favorite to be Green Bay’s starting QB for the 2021 NFL season.

If you think that the clock is ticking and that Rodgers’ time in Green Bay is near an end, then him being out as Green Bay starting QB next season is offered at odds of +150.

The Packers selected Utah State QB Love in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft.

Odds Aaron Rodgers is Green Bay Packers Starting QB in 2021

Outcome Odds
Yes -150
No +120

Odds taken Sept. 3rd.

Rodgers is signed with the Packers through the 2023 season when he’ll celebrate his 40th birthday.

Rodgers All About the Love

A good sign right off the bat is that Rodgers has expressed no qualms about mentoring Love to eventually usurp his position. That wasn’t the case with then-Packers QB Brett Favre when Rodgers was brought in to be groomed as his successor.

At first, Rodgers admitted his unhappiness with the team’s choice to select Love. He seems to have come to terms with it since.

Rodgers even admitted he’s chatted with Favre about the similarities in their respective situations. Favre originally gave Rodgers the cold shoulder, suggesting it wasn’t his job to mentor his replacement.

This time around, that won’t be the case, Rodgers insists. The Green Bay QB believes that part of a player’s legacy comes from whether they’re a good teammate, and that’s what he intends to be.

Learning from History

The Favre-Rodgers situations also provide an intriguing historical window to perhaps decipher how this situation will ultimately play out.

There certainly are similarities. Rodgers was selected out of California with the 24th pick of the 2005 NFL Draft. Love was claimed with the 26th choice of this year’s draft.

Favre was entering his 14th season as Green Bay’s starting QB when his eventual replacement arrived on the scene. Rodgers is about to embark on his 13th campaign as Packers’ starting QB.

Rodgers sat and watched for three seasons while Favre continued to helm the club from under center. He was named the starter in 2008 after Favre was traded to the New York Jets.

Packers’ Present May Determine Rodgers’ Future

The last two seasons are among the more efficient of Rodgers’ NFL career. He’s led the league two years in a row with the lowest interception percentage – 0.3 in 2019 and 0.7 last season. His overall numbers have fallen off slightly but not significantly enough to cause alarm.

Perhaps most importantly, the Packers won the NFC North title in their first year under new head coach Matt LaFleur and went to the NFC Championship Game.

As long as the Packers feel they have a chance to win, they aren’t likely to want to go through the painful learning curve of a young QB.

Rodgers at the helm clearly remains Green Bay’s best chance to win. As long as that’s the case. Love’s key role as an NFL QB will be to hold a clipboard and absorb as much knowledge as he can, knowing that one day, his time will arrive.

Pick: Yes (-150)
