Will the Los Angeles Rams and Chargers finish with more wins than the New York Jets and Giants? Photo by The 621st Contingency Response Wing
  • The New York Jets finished with 4-12 last year while the New York Giants were 5-11
  • The Jets’ 2019 win total is 7.5 while the Giants are at just 6.0
  • The Chargers and Rams won 25 games combined last season and both have win totals of 10.0 in 2019

The New York Jets and Giants are both rebuilding teams while the Los Angeles Chargers and Rams are expected to contend in for a conference championship, at least.

A prop pitting the two cities’ teams against each other has been posted. The question is a simple one: which pair of teams will win more games in 2019?

The LA teams are massive favorites (see table, below). Is there any value betting on the Giants/Jets to surpass the Rams/Chargers win total in the coming season?

Teams Odds
Los Angeles (Rams & Chargers) -1000
New York (Jets & Giants) +500

Odds taken 08/29/19.

Jets Not Expected To Make The Playoffs

The Jets and Giants are both expected to be better than last season but neither is expected to really push for a playoff spot. The Jets are in a division with the stalwart New England Patriots while the Giants are in a division with the Dallas Cowboys and Philadelphia Eagles – two of the favorites in the NFC.

The Jets lost nine of their final 10 games to end their 2018 campaign, then fired head coach Todd Bowles, and made a number of big offseason signings. They should be better than a four-win team – especially if second-year quarterback Sam Darnold takes the next step.

However, I have some big concerns about their defense. Gregg Williams is now the defensive coordinator. He typically helps defenses overachieve and has some top-end talent to work with, but the Jets are thin on the defensive line, linebacking corps, and secondary.

If they’re to be in contention for a Wild Card berth, it would have to be the offense that carries them and I don’t see that happening. That being the case, I expect this team to be around .500, at-best, next season.

Giants Could Improve Slightly

The Giants are a team that everyone expects to be among the worst in the NFL. I don’t think they’ll be that bad but they might not be improved much from the five wins they collected last season.

While it’s true that the Giants were decimated by injuries last season and the defense was a wreck, they still have other underlying problems that will limit their ceiling. Does Eli Manning have anything left in the tank? Is the offensive line decent? Is this coaching capable of developing the youngsters?

In my eyes, even if all of that is true, this team is at-best a .500 squad – and that feels optimistic. What’s more likely is that they tread water early on while the calls for Daniel Jones to take over at quarterback grow louder. Even if he is good, he’s not carrying this team above .500.

Rams, Chargers Expected to Compete for Super Bowl

The flip side of this prop is not only do the New York teams have to do well for you to cash, the Los Angeles teams have to slump. That’s hard to imagine from two teams that have been strong over the last few seasons and enter with plenty of consistency year-over-year.

The Chargers have won at least nine games in each of their two seasons under Anthony Lynn. With Philip Rivers back, a good supporting cast and a strong defense, they should be pushing for double-digit wins.

As for the Rams, they’ve won at least 11 games in each of Sean McVay’s first two seasons. They figure to be the biggest problem for Jets/Giants bettors in this prop. The Rams are like a well-oiled machine with an elite offense that figures to keep out churning out points and wins.

The NFL win totals for the Rams and Chargers adds up to 20 (they’re at 10 wins each) while the Jets and Giants add up to 13.5. That’s a huge gap. As long as everyone stays healthy, I don’t see the Jets and Giants coming anywhere close to these Los Angeles teams.

What’s The Best Bet?

There’s not much value laying -10000 with any prop and I wouldn’t recommend it here. In fact, I do see some value with the dog here. Do I actually think the Jets/Giants finish with more wins than the Rams/Chargers? Definitely not. However, injuries happen and the NFL is an unpredictable league.

If a quarterback goes does for any of the teams, this prop gets turned on its head. If you want to take a flier with that in mind, I’d take the Jets/Giants but in my eyes, that’s what you’re banking on if you think they finish with more wins.
