Two high-flying teams that finished first in their respective divisions last season square off on Thursday. The Avalanche won their season debut 5-2 on Wednesday, and they’re up against the Flames, who are playing their first contest.

Both are no strangers to scoring lots of goals, as they were both in the top-six in highest goals per contest last year. There’s a strong chance that this Avalanche vs Flames matchup could see the lamp being lit quite often.

The Avalanche have the shortest Stanley Cup odds at +450 to win back-to-back titles, while Calgary is the seventh choice. The Flames are -127 favorites in a contest that features a total of 6.5.

Puck drop is set for 9:30 pm ET at the Scotiabank Saddledome in Calgary, Alberta with Altitude providing the broadcast coverage in the States and Sportsnet showing it in Canada.

Colorado Avalanche Betting Analysis

In their first game of the campaign, the Avs easily walked all over the Blackhawks to the tune of a 5-2 result. Artturi Lehkonen had a big night with two goals and one assist, and Valeri Nichushkin chipped in with two goals.

In the off-season, they dolled out contract extensions to Lehkonen and Nichushkin which looks wise after Wednesday. They also replaced Cup-winning goaltender Darcy Kuemper by prying Alexandar Georgiev away from the Rangers.

Colorado did, however, lose some key components to their squad with forwards Nazem Kadri (now on the Flames) and Andre Burakovsky (Kraken) leaving town.

Calgary Flames Betting Analysis

It was one tumultuous off-season for the Calgary Flames that initially looked disastrous when fan favorite Johnny Gaudreau opted not to re-sign with the club, in lieu of heading to the Columbus Blue Jackets. Then, star two-way forward Matthew Tkachuk (who had 104 points last year), indicated he would not re-up with the team next off-season, so they decided to deal him to Florida in a blockbuster.

The return settled the nerves of the fanbase as they brought Jonathan Huberdeau and his 115 points into town (tied second in the NHL with Gaudreau). In that same trade, they also acquired blueliner MacKenzie Weegar, then promptly signed him to an 8-year/$50 million dollar deal. Add in Kadri, who left the Cup champs for the Flames, and a seemingly crossroads off-season turned into some quality work by GM Brad Treliving.

The Avs also inked their superstar Nathan MacKinnon to the richest contract in the league in an 8-year, $100.8 M pact that goes into effect in 2023-24. He and the aforementioned Huberdeau are top-eight choices to win the Hart Trophy.

The teams squared off three times last season, with Calgary winning the first in OT then the Avalanche taking the final two as they held their counterparts to one total goal. Previous to that, they hadn’t played since 2019 due to COVID-19. In all, the Avs have won four of the last six meetings against Calgary.

Avalanche vs Flames Pick

Calgary was excellent at home last season (25-9-7), but it is still slightly surprising that the Avalanche are underdogs in this game, considering how dominant they are. They played Wednesday, but they were 8-2-1 in the second half of back-to-backs last season.

Avalanche vs Flames Same-Game Parlay Picks

Pick Odds
Over 6.5 Goals -103
Colorado Avalanche Moneyline +105
PARLAY ODDS  +310

The Avs are expected to start backup Pavel Francouz. The Flames will counter with Jacob Markstrom, who is very talented. However, in his last five playoff contests last year, he gave up at least four goals in each game. Expect a high-flying, exciting affair with a lot of goals. Any time you can get the Avs at plus money, it’s screaming value.

Pick: Colorado Avalanche Moneyline (+105), Over 6.5 goals
