Italy capped an impressive performance at Euro 2020 by escaping with a narrow win on penalties over England to claim their first European Cup title since 1968. But despite ending a 15-year championship drought at major international tournaments with Sunday’s thrilling victory, Italy continues to lag behind the favorites in the 2022 FIFA World Cup odds as a +1100 bet. Conversely, England’s first loss in 13 matches across all competitions has failed to shake them from their position among the favorites, sporting +800 odds.

Here’s a look at all the World Cup 2022 odds and trends as the focus of the soccer world shifts to the 2022, which is scheduled to get underway in Qatar on November 21, 2022.

Italy Enjoy Epic Win Streak

Italy left little doubt as to who brought the best squad to this year’s edition of the European championships. Their Euro 2020 victory marks their first win on the international stage since the 2006 World Cup. Italy now ride a 15-match win streak across all competitions, and have not suffered a defeat in 34 matches since dropping a 1-0 decision to Portugal in UEFA Nations League action almost three years ago.

The Azzurri are likely to get a boost from their current position at No. 7 when the next edition of the FIFA World Rankings are released in early August. Indeed, the Italians enjoyed no easy road on their march to Euro glory, with their final three wins of the tournament coming against opponents perched among the top six ranked teams in the world, including No. 1 Belgium.

Azzurri Still Have Lots to Prove

Pegged as a +1600 bet in World Cup odds prior to the start of Euro 2020, the Azzurri can credit a stingy defense for their recent steady run of success. Italy has surrendered just 11 total goals during their epic unbeaten streak, and have trailed opponents in scoring in fewer than 110 total minutes of play during that stretch.

And if this team is in need of any further motivation as the countdown to Qatar 2022 continues, all they have to do is look back four years to the humiliation they suffered after failing to qualify for the 2018 World Cup. Considering how things are going this time around, getting back to the big show should no be a challenge for Italy. The squad currently sits perched atop the Group C table in UEFA World Cup qualifying, posting clean sheets in each of their three wins to date.

Top Ranked Teams Showing Shaky Form

While Italy’s World Cup hopes have soared, it has been a far less triumphant summer so far for the teams at the top of the odds board. Despite suffering a stunning 1-0 loss to archrivals Argentina this past weekend in the Copa America final, Brazil continues to lead the way as +500 favorites. They are trailed by defending world champions France, who sport short +600 odds despite making a disappointing exit from Euro 2020 in the round of 16.

England also remains in the mix at the top of the World Cup odds as a +800 bet despite being badly outplayed in Sunday’s loss to Italy, ahead of Spain, who lag at +900 in the wake of their semifinal loss to Italy. Losers to the Italians in the quarterfinals, top-ranked Belgium joins at +1100. Incredibly, both those squads continue to lag behind Germany, who continue to hang tough at +1000 despite their shocking early exit at Russia 2018, and their shaky performance at Euro 2020, where they posted just one win in four matches.

Argentina an Intriguing Dark Horse

Considering the recent shaky form of the teams that are ranked tops in the world, it is tough to ignore the value offered by Italy in the World Cup odds. The other squad that is equally worthy of consideration is this past weekend’s other big winner, Argentina.

After getting Lionel Messi his first career major tournament victory with Saturday’s win over Brazil, the sky is the limit for the Albiceleste, who currently trail as a +1200 bet.

But for my money, Italy looks like the best value bet at this time to win back-to-back major titles.

The Pick: Italy +1100
