- Read on for our preview and best bet for this weekend’s 2019/20 Champions League final
The UEFA Champions League Final is set between two of the biggest teams in Europe when PSG face Bayern Munich at 3:00 pm EST on August 23 at Portugal’s Estadio da Luz.
PSG are looking to add a fourth trophy to their cabinet this season after winning the league along with two domestic competitions already. After a run of four-straight quarterfinals appearances, PSG had only reached the round of 16 each of the past three seasons. A win in the semifinals versus Leipzig has set them up to play in their club’s first UCL final in their 50-year history.
With their win over Lyon on Wednesday, Bayern ensured there wouldn’t be an all-French final. Munich will play in the final for the first time since winning the tournament in 2012/13 and will look to win the club’s sixth Champions League title. Bayern are listed as the +108 favorites to win in regulation in the Champions League odds.

Paris Saint-Germain Into First UCL Final
It’s been a long time since a team from France has reached the prestigious European final. Not since the 2003/04 season when Monaco lost to Porto, has a team from Ligue 1 made the Champions League final.
PSG coasted through their group stage schedule posting a 5-1-0 record against Real Madrid, Club Brugge and Galatasaray. Their lone draw coming in their fifth match against Madrid, a 2-2 result. They scored 17 goals while only conceding those two.

Advancing to the round of 16 saw the Parisians lose 2-1 in Dortmund, before winning 2-0 in the return fixture. Upon the Champions League’s resumption post-lockdown, they were perilously close to failing to come out of the quarterfinals. Down 1-0 to Italy’s Atalanta for most of the match, they needed late goals by Marquinhos (90′) and Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting (93′) to escape with the 2-1 win.
That set up a date with Germany’s RB Leipzig and this time, PSG made sure to take care of business early. PSG took control of the match with Marquinhos scoring again from a headed goal off a Neymar free-kick just 13 minutes into the match. Leipzig would have been pleased to reach the half only down one, yet a poor pass out of the back late in the half resulted in a turnover and a second PSG goal, this time from Angel Di Maria.
PSG continued to attack in the second half and added to their tally with a Juan Bernat Velasco goal in the 56′ to take the 3-0 win.
Because Ligue 1 ended prematurely and did not resume their season, PSG has played very few competitive matches. Outside of some friendlies which saw them run out as easy victors, their only other matches were two cup finals. They edged out Saint-Etienne 1-0 in the French Cup Final on July 24 and again just barely won versus Lyon a week later, winning 1-0 in penalties against Lyon in the last-ever Coupe de la Ligue Final.

Bayern Munich Eyeing Sixth Title
The Bavarians have run rampant through this competition being a perfect 6-0-0 in the group stage, defeating each of Tottenham, Olympiacos and Red Star Belgrade and scoring 24 times while conceding only five.
Bayern brushed aside Chelsea in the round of 16, 3-0 and 4-1, before completely dismantling Spanish giants Barcelona 8-2 in the quarterfinals. After an impressive showing in upsetting Juventus and Man City, Lyon’s potential fairytale run to the finals ended when Bayern defeated them 3-0 in the semifinals this week. Lyon looked promising to start the match but a brace by Serge Gnabry with goals in the 18′ and 33′ minutes gave Bayern a 2-0 lead heading into the half. A third by Robert Lewandowski in the 88′ ensured there would be no late comeback in the cards.
Gnabry and Lewandowski have combined to score 24 goals in the UCL this season.

Lewandowski leads the scoring race in this year’s competition and his late goal against Lyon brought his total to 15 goals in nine UCL matches this season. He’s scored in every match during this tournament. Considering he’s now scored 55 times in all competitions this season, it’s almost criminal that the 2020 Ballon d’Or Award was canceled this year, as he surely had to be considered a favorite.

It’s hardly just been the Champions League which has seen Bayern dominate their opponents of late though. Bayern won their eighth-straight Bundesliga title when the league resumed from lockdown, finishing ahead of second-place Borussia Dortmund by 13 points. They also managed to eclipse the century mark for goals scored, tallying 100 on the year. Of those 100, Lewandowski scored 34, six more than any other player in the league.
They haven’t lost a competitive match since December 7, a 2-1 defeat to Borussia Monchengladbach. Since that time they’re undefeated in 28-straight competitive matches, winning 27 of them.
Since re-emerging from the break, Bayern was ruthless during the restart going 9-0-0 and outscoring their opponents 27-6. Mixed into those league and UCL results was also 2-1 and 4-2 wins over Eintracht Frankfurt and Bayer Leverkusen respectively in the DFB-Pokal, which also saw Bayern lift the trophy.

PSG vs Bayern Munich Best Bet
Hansi Flick’s time in charge of Bayern this year has been spotless. His side has barely missed a step and it’s hard to find a hole in their lineup right now. They were strong in the restart of the Bundesliga and even sitting through another break after their league season finished early and waiting for UCL play to resume could not cool them off.
I personally am already sitting on a +300 ticket on the Bavarians to win the title and I’m not sure I see a reason to feel different going into the final.

But let’s not discount PSG. They themselves have just one defeat in 32 matches across all competitions. That came back in February in the group stage to Borussia Dortmund (2-1). Prior to that defeat, their last loss was back in November in the league, a 2-1 loss to Dijon.
While the final scoreline of 3-0 for Bayern over Lyon looks impressive, Lyon, with better finishing, could’ve easily scored once or maybe twice early on. The high-line that Bayern play with will certainly be susceptible to being exposed by PSG’s attacking stars.
I struggle to see a scenario where Bayern doesn’t score but I feel PSG will have plenty of opportunities themselves. To me, Bayern have looked just slightly more clinical of late. Watching PSG in recent domestic finals score just one goal combined against Saint-Etienne and Lyon left much to be desired. And while a 3-0 win over RB Leipzig (minus striker Timo Werner) looks decent, they were minutes away from losing in the quarterfinals to Atalanta and never making it this far.
My safest bet is both teams scoring with OVER 2.5 goals. But the better value lies with a straight Bayern win or a Bayern win and both teams scoring. Additionally, I see some value with any of the props in the above table.
Picks: Bayern Munich Win (+108), or Bayern Munich to Win & Both Teams to Score (+187)
