Parma Aims to Extend Rare Win Streak

Parma return home for Tuesday’s date with Atalanta as lengthy underdogs despite riding a steady two-match win streak. The club is coming off a narrow 2-1 victory in Brescia on Saturday, marking the first time they have recorded wins in consecutive outings across all competitions since mid-December. Indeed, Parma’s current surge marks their only sustained success since Italian soccer returned last month.

After picking up four of six possible points in road dates with Torino and Genoa in their first tests following a three-month layoff, the Crusaders struggled badly, compiling a 0-1-6 win-draw-loss record in seven subsequent Serie A contests before getting back into the win column last week.

Improved Defense Key to Recent Success

Containing opposing attackers was a huge problem for Parma during their recent slide. The club surrendered just under 2.5 goals per match during their seven-match winless run, but have tightened up considerably on defense of late, holding opponents off the scoresheet in the first half of their two recent victories.

The challenge now for Parma will be to maintain that momentum at home, where they have gone 1-1-5 in their past seven outings. While the club has tallied six total goals over their past three home dates, each of their past three markers have come either on penalties or via an own goal, and only one of their other three markers has come before the 90-minute mark.

Atalanta Poised to Extend Epic Unbeaten Streak

While Parma enters Round 37 of the Serie A campaign in a tight battle for a spot among the top ten on the league table, the stakes are higher for Atalanta BC, who are set to hit the pitch as lofty -300 road favorites. La Dea are coming off a hard fought 1-1 draw with AC Milan on Friday to extend their current unbeaten streak to 19 matches across all competitions. The club has gone 6-3-0 in their past nine contests on the road, but have failed to close the deal of late, settling for draws in each of their past three matches away from Gewiss Stadium.

Atalanta have seen their offensive production drop off considerably in recent outings, tallying just a single goal in each of their past three after scoring an eye-popping 3.56 goals per match over their previous 16 contests.

Visit to Parma a Tonic for Struggling Attack?

The absence of midfielder Josip Ilicic has not helped matters. The 32-year-old sits second on the club with 15 goals this season but has failed to score in six appearances since the Serie A schedule resumed. Ilicic had been hobbled by an ankle sprain and has not seen action in the club’s past four outings due to concerns over his conditioning.

Despite the club’s limited production of late, they should be poised to get back into the win column in Tuesday’s matchup. Atalanta have dominated in recent dates with Parma, outscoring the Crusaders by a wide 16-1 margin in six straight league victories since 2014, capped by a crushing 5-0 win on home turf back on January 6. While Parma are a solid bet to find the back of the net on Tuesday, look for a reinvigorated offense to power Atalanta to victory by a multi-goal margin.

Picks: Atalanta to win and both teams to score (+130); OVER 3.5 (+102)
