The 2020-21 Ligue 1 season begins this Saturday with, unsurprisingly, PSG opening as massive odds-on favorites. We take a look at all the Ligue 1 odds including odds to finish Top 10, Top 6 and Top 3.
  • The new Ligue 1 starts this Saturday, with the scheduled Friday opener of Marseille vs St Etienne now postponed
  • PSG, as ever, start the season as favorites but have seen their odds lengthen marginally after Lyon’s UCL heroics
  • We’ll list the odds for the winner, top three, top six and top ten and try and identify a pick for each

The 2020-21 Ligue 1 season begins this Saturday with, unsurprisingly, PSG opening as massive odds-on favorites. Lyon’s impressive Champions League campaign has caused the Parisiens’ average odds to marginally increase from -1917 to -1410, while Lyon’s own have shortened from +2533 to +2167.

Other teams who have seen their Ligue 1 odds shorten are Lille, from +6533 to +5000, and Monaco from +7667 to +4667 but while none of them are likely to live with PSG, there is a chasing pack that’s quite hard to separate.

As well as the traditional winner market, oddsmakers have also opened books for Top 3, Top 6, and Top 10, and we’ll have a look at all four.

Megabucks PSG

PSG are massive odds-on favorites yet again – as has been the case since Qatar Sports Investments took over the club’s ownership in 2011 – and it’s very difficult to see any team challenging them, even though Lyon’s recent Champions League suggests they’re getting closer. For PSG every defeat, every dropped point, and even every poor performance is analyzed and questioned, such is the financial might of those behind the Parisiens.

If they do go on to win the 2019-20 season’s Champions League – they qualified for the final via an emphatic 3-0 semifinal win over RB Leipzig – then it will a big box ticked as it was one of their owners’ stated aims, but a Ligue 1 title is classed as the bare minimum for them. They won the 2019/20 quadruple and, as daft as it sounds, there is value in the -1430 currently on offer for the PSG title win.

Pick: PSG to win Ligue 1 (-1430)

Marseille and Lyon to Be PSG Main Challengers?

Where it gets more interesting, is when looking at who may gatecrash the top three. Last season it was Marseille and Rennes who joined PSG, albeit Marseille in second finished 12 points behind the champions, but given Lyon’s outstanding run in the Champions League, there’s every reason to believe they will be part of the mix this season Yet, on a domestic level they need to improve and it’s worth noting they finished a whopping 28 points behind PSG, losing 10 games along the way. The -134 on offer for Lyon is not especially tempting.

Marseille look well equipped for another good season, and I’d not be at all surprised if they were PSG’s main challengers, and Lille will be looking to improve upon their fourth-place last season, but the value here looks to be with Rennes at +400. They finished third in 2019/20 and, despite still being relatively unfancied, still have a best-of-the-rest look about them, specifically because of their well-organized and disciplined defense. They’re worth a gamble.

Pick: Rennes to finish Top 3 (+400)

Bordeaux to Gatecrash Top Six?

The race for the top six is equally fascinating and offers even better value to the bettors, with arguably 15 teams in with a chance of sixth or better. With Nice and Reims finishing fifth and sixth last season, neither can be discounted especially with Reims having such a solid defense – they only conceded 21 goals in their 28 games last season.

Montpellier’s eighth place, albeit in a truncated season, indicates a team that is capable of closing the gap to the top six, while Bordeaux, despite ending up down in 12th, finished the campaign with a positive goal difference. Well worth noting. As both teams are in decent plus-money, there is value to be had with both but Bordeaux’s +300 makes it that little bit juicier.

Pick: Bordeaux to finish Top 6 (+300)

Angers for a Top Half Finish?

With 20 teams in Ligue 1, the market for top-half finish offers up some tempting bets among the league’s minnows. With, as logic dictates, half the division odds-on to finish in the top ten, it’s to those teams of which little is expected that we’ll look for some value here.

Angers, with an 11th-place finish last season, are definitely in the mix for a top-half finish, and a defensive record of conceding 33 goals in 28 games last season suggests that with a few tweaks they are capable of taking it to the next level. Brest, at +275, offers even better value and should be considered after finishing 14th last time out, with wins over Reims and Strasbourg proving they are capable of punching above their weight.

Pick: Brest to finish Top 10 (+275)
