Tottenham and Leicester’s Sunday matchup is the biggest clash of the 14th round of Premier League fixtures. Spurs are looking to bounce back from a midweek loss to Liverpool. Leicester suffered their own disappointment at the hands of Merseyside opposition, losing to Everton. The Foxes could go second with a win – Spurs could be six points behind Liverpool by the time this one kicks off on Sunday.

Matchday 14 is the final round of Premier League fixtures before Boxing Day. It’s a significant match for both teams after midweek defeats, particularly with tough matches to come (Leicester face Manchester United on the 26th and Spurs are away to Wolves on the 27th).

Recent Meetings

Tottenham have won five of their previous seven meetings with Leicester, including a 3-0 victory in July of this year. Leicester haven’t won away to Spurs since 2016, when a late goal from Robert Huth was the difference between the two sides. A lot has changed for both clubs since then, and with a lone point separating them in second and fourth, this is potentially a pivotal match in the Premier League title race.

Brendan Rodgers and Jose Mourinho have clashed in the past. Their footballing philosophies are contrasting, but their Tottenham and Leicester sides are more similar than their general outlooks would suggest. They are two of the league leaders in through balls. Both teams are at their best attacking in transition, and while they have the personnel to press high up the pitch, neither are as aggressive as Leeds or Liverpool in that regard – they both rank in the bottom half of the league in pressure success rate.

Mourinho resorted to his trustworthy big game tactics against Chelsea and Liverpool. It worked for the most part despite Spurs only picking up one point from those encounters. Leicester’s points tally would suggest a similar approach is in order on Sunday, but the loss in midweek might force the former Real Madrid manager to be more aggressive.

Leicester To Control Possession

The relentless duo of Harry Kane and Heung-Min Son have been tearing defenses apart this season. Kane leads the league in assists, most of which have been setting up Son. Spurs have ridden some red-hot finishing from their attacking players (they have significantly overperformed their expected goals), and sit second in the league in percentage of shots on target.

While Spurs will commit more players forward than they did against Chelsea and Liverpool, Mourinho’s side will be happy to let Leicester have possession in the middle third. Tottenham are third in the league in middle third pressures – they will look to snatch the ball and launch counters through Kane.

Leicester are in the bottom half of the league in expected goals against this term. They are 19th in successful tackle rate. Averaging 53% possession for the season, Leicester will need to create chances when they have the ball because it’s hard to see them keeping Kane and Son quiet.

Spurs To Take Three Points

Inconsistency has riddled Leicester’s season. Impressive wins over Leeds, Arsenal and Manchester City have been mixed with poor performances and defeats to Liverpool, Fulham and West Ham. Leicester is a better team when opponents give them space to run into, space for Jamie Vardy to get in behind. Spurs are not going to give them that.

Spurs need to win this match. They cannot afford this dodgy run of form to become two wins in seven matches. Leicester’s approach should favor Kane and Son – combine that with Spurs’ solid defense and they should win this one.

Spurs to win to nil is a good bet at +300, but let’s play it safe with the hosts to score first and win the match.

Pick: Spurs to score first and win (+138)
