Zverev is the Heavy Favorite

Zverev breezed past his opponent when he defeated Kei Nishikori 6-4, 6-1, 6-1 to earn a spot in the quarterfinals.

It was a battle of US Open finalists, but Zverev was able to completely control this match, and didn’t allow for his opponent to gain any momentum whatsoever.

He’s been quite dominant on clay this year, having recorded wins over the King of clay himself, Rafael Nadal, and Dominic Thiem just last tournament in Madrid, where he came out on top.

The German had a slight scare in the first round when he dropped his first two sets to fellow countrymen Oscar Otte, but was able to battle back to win the next three sets to win the match, and has yet to lose a set since.

He’ll now to look face Davidovich Fokina, who’s he’s found success against in the past, but have never faced him in a clay tournament.

Alejandro Davidovich Fokina’s Maiden Grand Slam QF

It was definitely a battle, but the 22-year old Spaniard earned his spot in his maiden Grand Slam quarterfinal when he defeated Federico Delbonis 6-4, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4, in a match that lasted almost three hours.

In the fourth round match, Davidovich Fokina recorded 42 winners and broke his opponent seven times. And with the win, he improves his record to 19-10 on the season. From start to finish he truly outplayed his opponent, and managed to capitalize on Delbonis’ unforced errors.

He’s in for a tough match against Zverev, who is no stranger to the big stage of a Grand Slam. No question, this will be his toughest match of the tournament to date, and the competition won’t lighten up whatsoever if he ends up winning this quarterfinal.

Head-to-Head & Best Bet

These two have played each other twice before and Zverev holds the 2-0 head-to-head edge. Both matches came back in 2020, with the German winning in straight sets both times. Their most recent match was in October at the Cologne 1 semifinals, where Zverev won 7-5, 7-6(3).

There really shouldn’t be a reason why Zverev doesn’t record the win here. Davidovich Fokina has played extremely well, and it’s a huge accomplishment that he’s here in the final eight. But the 22-year old has spent quite a bit more time on the court this tournament than his opponent, with three of his four matches going four or more sets. It’s possible some fatigue sets in here.

Additionally, Zverev is just playing at a higher level, and with the experience that he has, it seems like it should be a fairly easy win.
