We’re down to the final eight in Paris, with the quarterfinal matches taking place over Tuesday, June 8th and Wednesday June 9th. Both Rybakina and Pavlyuchenkova have had big tournaments so far, as they’ll now go head-to-head against each other for a spot in the semifinals.
Rybakina comes into the match the slight favorite after defeating Serena Williams in straight sets to end her quest for 24. But Pavlyuchenkova not only upset her opponent Victoria Azarenka in the fourth round, but top favorite to win Aryna Sabalenka in the third round as well.

Rybakina Upsets Williams
21-year old Rybakina earned her spot in her first Grand Slam quarterfinal after taking down Serena Williams 6-4, 7-5 in the fourth round. In just her seventh Grand Slam appearance, this is the first time Rybakina has actually made it past the second round.
She managed to control the match against Williams, not allowing her to gain any momentum whatsoever. Fun fact, Rybakina wasn’t even born when Williams made her tournament debut in 1998, and when Williams won her first Grand Slam title at the US Open in 1999, Rybakina was just two months old.
In this match in particular, Rybakina did a great job returning Williams’ strong serves, which resulted in breaking her fives times. She herself also managed to land big serves, and was it ended up being one of her strengths over the course of the match.
Williams wasn’t playing up to the same level as we’re used to, as she only managed to record 15 winners but racked up 19 unforced errors. Pretty unlikely of the superstar.
Rybakina will now look ahead to the quarterfinals where she’ll take on another tough opponent in Pavlyuchenkova, as she looks to earn a spot in her maiden Grand Slam semifinal.
Pavlyuchenkova Returns to the French Open Quarterfinals
Pavlyuchenkova entered her fourth round match against Azarenka having a less than ideal head-to-head record against the Belarusian. In their five previous meetings, Pavlyuchenkova had gone 0-5. But after going down a set, she managed to come back to win 5-7, 6-3, 6-3, to earn her spot in the final eight in Paris since 2011.

In the match where she saw herself down a set, she managed to break her opponent a total of six times over the second and third set to help complete the comeback win. She recorded a total of 45 winners and 32 unforced errors, with only 11 of those unforced errors coming in the final two sets. She was able to clean her game up and take control of the match.
Azarenka, who started off very strong, also managed more unforced errors than winners in those final two sets, which allowed for Pavlyuchenkova to record the win.

These two have never played against each other on tour, but they are playing with each other this tournament. Interestingly enough, the two are currently doubles partners at the French Open, and are scheduled to play in the quarterfinals for doubles play on Wednesday.

Both players are playing strong tennis right now. Overall, Pavlyuchenkova does have more experience, and just more experience in a Grand Slam quarterfinal. Despite never making it to a semifinal of a Grand Slam, this will be her seventh Grand Slam quarterfinal.
But ultimately it is going to come down to a lot of mental toughness. Rybakina’s coming off a huge win, and Pavlyuchenkova has never been able to make it to the semifinals. These are two things that could affect their play. We’ve seen some players continue to thrive and have strong wins, but we’ve also seen players crash after recording big upset wins like Rybakina did.
I’m giving the edge to Pavlyuchenkova, but if Rybakina can come into the match calm and collected, it could be an interesting one.
