French Open Round of 32 Odds & Predictions – Women’s Singles

It’s down to the final 32 in Paris, as the French Open continues for women’s singles play. Despite a few upsets, many of the top players are still competing as the competition looks to get tougher and tougher.

Swiatek continues to defend her title after two rounds of straight set wins, but there are still so many familiar faces competing, that there’s no clear path to the finals for anyone.

Serena Williams vs Danielle Collins Prediction

It’s an all-American clash at the French Open happening Friday, June 4th at 10 AM ET between Williams and Collins.

Williams continues to search for her historic 24th Major title here in Paris, but that almost came to an early end in the second round, when she dropped a set to Mihaela Buzarnescu. Williams was able to regroup and take control of the deciding set to win the match 6-3, 5-7, 6-1.

Collins on the other hand seemed to barely break a sweat in her second round match, where she wasn’t the favorite, to defeat Anhelina Kalinina 6-0, 6-2. After an eight week break due to surgery, no one really knew how Collins was going to keep up. After looking a little rusty and perhaps a little nervous in her first round match, she quickly put that behind her, and really dominated her next match.

These two only have one previous meeting to go off of, but it came earlier this year. The two faced each other in the quarterfinals of the Yarra Valley Classic where Williams won in three sets.

I think this will be a really exciting match. If Williams is in the zone, then I believe it’s probably game over, but if she gives Collins even just the slightest bit to take advantage of, she will. This match will definitely come down to focus and concentration for both players.

Sofia Kenin vs Jessica Pegula Prediction

And we have another all-American clash happening in the third round. This match is scheduled for Saturday between Kenin and Pegula, and will be the fourth meeting between the two. Pegula currently holds the head-to-head record 2-1.

Both players have had a similar start to the tournament. Both Kenin and Pegula’s first round matches went three sets when they dropped the second, forcing a decider, and both players’ second round matches were strong straight set victories.

Kenin has had a less than ideal 2021. She wasn’t able to record a win on clay leading up to Paris, and had appendix surgery earlier that forced her to sit out of competitive play for a month. But it looks like she has started to find her form again here at the French Open with her two wins.

Quite the opposite, Pegula has actually had a great 2021 season so far. She has won nine of 12 matches on clay, and has had both a quarterfinal and semifinal appearances this year.

Because of injury and just getting her form back, Pegula might have the upperhand on Kenin this match. Either way it’ll be an really exciting match, that should go the distance.

Maria Sakkari vs Elise Mertens Prediction

Not another all-American clash, but another match that is sure to be exciting. Sakkari and Mertens will go head-to-head for the eighth time in their careers on Saturday. Mertens currently holds the head-to-head record with a 4-3 edge over Sakkari, but their last meeting came back in 2019.

Sakkari has eased past her opponents with back-to-back straight set wins to earn her spot in the third round. She defeated Italy’s Jasmine Paolini 6-2, 6-3 in just over an hour. In her win, Sakkari recorded 19 winners and five aces. The Greek star didn’t have the most impressive clay season leading up to the French Open, having not made it past the Round of 16, but she’ll be looking to make it beyond the third round here in Paris for the first time in her career.

Mertens almost had an early exit when she found herself down a set against Zarina Diyas, and had to comeback to win. But she managed to eventually record the win in two and a half hours to earn a spot in the third round at Roland Garros for the fifth time in a row. She ended up beating Diyas 4-6, 6-2, 6-4.

Mertens has played better on clay, but Sakkari is currently in great form.
