The New York Knicks and Utah Jazz meet at the Vivint Arena on Monday, February, 7th. This is the first of two meetings between the teams this season, with the second coming on March, 20th at Madison Square Garden.

Utah is favored in this matchup as the Knicks look to break out of a slump which has seen them win just two of their last nine. After a rough January, Utah has won back-to-back games, including a blowout win over the Nets a couple of days ago.

The Jazz are one of the worst teams against the spread at home, covering in just a third of their games. Only Orlando and Brooklyn have covered less frequently. The Knicks are 12-13 as a road team this season, and are 6-9 as a road dog.

Injury Report

Danuel House remains in health and safety protocols for the Jazz, and Joe Ingles is out for the season with a torn ACL. Reigning Sixth Man of the Year Jordan Clarkson and Rudy Gay are listed as day-to-day. Rudy Gobert (calf) sat out Friday’s win over Brooklyn and this game might come too soon for the Defensive Player of the Year.

New York has all of its rotation available aside from Derrick Rose, who is in line to make a comeback after the All-Star break.

Tom Thibodeau has been wrestling with his lineups all season, and Immanuel Quickley was held to under five minutes against the Lakers with Kemba Walker and Alec Burks combining for five-for-14 in 53 minutes.

Utah’s Three-Point Attack

The Jazz’s offense lit up Brooklyn to the tune of 125 points. They shot over 44% from deep as a team. Donovan Mitchell’s return ignites their offense — they are 8.2 points better per 100 possessions with Mitchell on the floor, and turn the ball over three percentage points less.

New York is a solid defensive team this season, ranking 12th in points given up per 100 possessions for the year. Just like 2021-22, though, Thibodeau’s defense allows a dangerous amount of threes. Only two teams give up a higher share of three-point shots. That’s a risky game to play against Utah — the Jazz lead the league in three-point rate, and only four teams hit perimeter shots at a better rate.

Udoka Azubuike and Hassan Whiteside are a far cry from Rudy Gobert on the defensive end, but the pair have been able to provide solid minutes on offense, setting screens and finishing plays at the rim. The Jazz offense has the best rating in the league by over two points, and their shot distribution suggests a nightmare matchup for the Knicks.

Knicks vs Jazz Pick

Both of these teams have underperformed this season and endured some rough losses in 2022. While the Jazz is dealing with some locker room tensions, they have Mitchell back and this Knicks offense is unlikely to take advantage of their weaker defense in the absence of Gobert.

The Julius Randle situation is becoming increasingly uncomfortable for New York, and despite an impressive few weeks from RJ Barrett, they are second-worst in offensive rating over the last 10.

The Jazz is not the perfect team, particularly when Gobert is out. Still, they are considerably better than the Knicks team we have seen over the last few weeks.

Six of the Knicks’ last eight losses have been by seven or more points. Utah beat the Nets by 23 and has a knack for winning big. The hosts are value to cover anywhere up to 8.5 – as the public have been betting so far.

Pick: Jazz to win (-295)
