Looking to build on one of its best wins of the season, St. John’s hosts Butler in a Big East game at 5 p.m. ET Friday at Carnesecca Arena in New York.

St. John’s (14-11/6-8 Big East/10-6 home) ended a two-game losing streak and got just its second Quad 1 victory of the season when it won at Xavier 86-73 on Wednesday. Butler (13-13/6-9 Big East/3-5 road) edged DePaul 73-71 on Tuesday on the road for its second win in a row following a three-game losing streak.

St. John’s is a nine-point favorite in a game that will be televised by CBS Sports Network and has an implied win probability of 81.82% based on being at -450 on the moneyline.

Neither team is projected to make the 2022 March Madness bracket at this stage of the season. Sitting 78th in the NET Rankings (and rising), St. John’s still has a shot. But 119th-ranked Butler likely needs an improbable run to the Big East Tournament title.

Butler Betting Outlook

Butler is just 11-15 against the spread this season. However, the Bulldogs have been the winning play in their last three games and are 6-2 on the road.

Freshman wing Simas Lukosius’ three-point field goal with six seconds left lifted Butler over DePaul. Lukosius scored 15 of his career-high 19 points in the second half when the Bulldogs overcame a nine-point deficit.

Chuck Harris was right behind Lukosius with 18 points. That raised the sophomore guard’s season scoring average to a team-high 10.8 points a game.

Harris is the only Butler player scoring in double digits. The Bulldogs, though, have eight players scoring at least 5.8 points a game.

Freshman guard Jayden Taylor, who is averaging 8.9 points, scored 12 on Tuesday. Senior guard Aaron Thompson added 11.

Butler played without senior wing Bo Hodges (calf) and senior forward Bryce Nze (knee). Both are questionable for Friday. Hodges (8.8) and Nze (8.3) are combining for 16.9 points a game.

Butler shot 50.0% (25 of 50) overall despite making just 5 of 19 (26.3%) three-point attempts as it snapped a five-game road losing streak.

St. John’s Betting Outlook

St. John’s is also on a good ATS run with four covers in its last five games. That has leveled the Red Storm’s overall record at 12-12 but they are just 5-10-1 in home games.

In the win over Xavier, St. John’s welcomed back sophomore guard Posh Alexander, who missed the previous two games with an ankle injury. In 25 minutes off the bench, he had eight points, four assists and four steals.

Alexander has season averages of 14.6 points, 5.1 assists, 4.4 rebounds and 2.5 steals. He leads the Big East and is fourth nationally in steals and is second in the conference in assists.

Junior wing Julian Champagnie led the way for St. John’s with 27 points, five assists and three steals. It was Champagnie’s third 20-point effort in the last five games and 11th of the season.

Champagnie is second in the Big East in scoring (18.7) and steals (1.8) while pulling down 6.6 rebounds a game.

St. John’s got some unexpected scoring punch from senior guard Tareq Coburn. He had 13 points for just his third double-digit performance of the season and first since Nov. 13.

Coburn had scored 12 points combined in the prior four games and was shut out in 16 minutes in a loss to Connecticut in the Red Storm’s most recent game.

Senior forward Aaron Wheeler added 11 points and eight rebounds. He has scored in double digits in six straight games and 12 of the last 13 after doing so only once in the first 12 games following his transfer from Purdue.

Senior guard Montez Mathis chipped in with 10 points for St. John’s, which shot 34 of 63 (54.0%) for its best performance in a conference game this season.

Butler vs St. John’s Prediction

St. John’s beat Butler 75-72 on Feb. 5 on the road and teams have split their last eight games.

Champagnie led St. John’s with 21 points and eight rebounds and Wheeler finished with 13 points. Butler got 22 points and seven rebounds from Hodges and 14 points, six rebounds and three steals from Nze.

While St. John’s is coming off a good win, it has struggled to cover at home this season and Butler has been a profitable road team.

The Pick: Butler +9 (-110)
