Gordon Leads Nicholls

Senior guard Ty Gordon has picked up where he left off last season for Nicholls as he is averaging a team-high 18.3 points a game. Gordon was a first-team All-Southland Conference selection in 2020-21 after transferring from Troy.

Gordon had 15 points Saturday night as Nicholls rolled to a 101-44 victory over Carver at home.

Gordon is just one of three players back from last season’s 18-7 team. The Colonels followed a 2-5 start with 16 wins in 17 games before losing to Abilene Christian in the Southland Tournament final.

Senior forward Emmanuel Little scored a game-high 20 points as he made 4-of-6 attempts from three-point range. Little also had seven rebounds and the transfer from North Alabama has a 10.3 scoring average.

Another transfer, senior guard Latrell Jones, is second on the team at 13.3 points a game after spending last season at Portland. Jones scored 18 points Friday.

Senior center Ryghe Lyons had four blocked shots as Nicholls held Carver to 31.1% shooting (17 of 53) and forced 30 turnovers.

Sophomore guard Pierce Spencer, another of the trio of holdovers from last season, leads the team with averages of 6.0 rebounds, 3.7 assists and 1.3 steals. He has a 6.3 scoring average.

Rings on Baylor’s Fingers

Baylor’s players received their national championship rings prior to the game against Incarnate Word then overcame a slow start to handily win handily.

Though only one starter returns from last season, Baylor was led by two members of that title team on opening night. Senior wing Matthew Mayer scored a team-high 14 points and sophomore guard LJ Cryer was right behind with 13.

Two newcomers also made an immediate impact. Highly touted freshman wing Kendall Brown finished with 13 points and senior guard James Akinjo, a transfer from Arizona, had 10 points and a game-high six assists.

Akinjo and Brown also provided a highlight play when Akinjo lifted a pass in transition near the basket for a one-handed alley-oop dunk from the trailing Brown.

Baylor trailed 22-16 before Cryer scored eight straight points, including back-to-back three-pointers, to move in front for good with 7:17 left in the first half.

Freshman forward Jeremy Sochan from England then scored eight points to spark an 11-2 run to end the first half. That extended the lead to 40-28. Sochan debuted with 10 points, all in the opening 20 minutes.

The freshman duo of Brown  and Sochan combined to make 10-of-15 field goal attempts.

Nicholls-Baylor Prediction

Baylor easily won the only other meeting between the schools, 81-54 during the 2018-19 season. Then a freshman, Mayer scored a game-high 18 points for the Bears.

While Baylor is one of the top teams in the country again this season, Nicholls beat a solid Northern Iowa team on the road to open the season. While it’s hard to imagine the Colonels winning the game, they should at least make things interesting.

The Pick: Nicholls +23.0 (-110)
