Bobcats vs Terrapins Betting Trends

The Terrapins struggled to follow up on their march to the Big Ten title in 2020, closing out the season with a middling 17-14 SU record and an eighth-place finish in the conference standings. Hobbled by multiple schedule distractions caused by COVID-19 outbreaks, the Bobcats also took a step back last season after posting .500 records in the two previous seasons. Quinnipiac stumbled down the stretch, closing out their schedule on a 1-5 run to finish with a 9-13 overall record, eighth place in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference.

Tuesday night’s contest marks the first-ever matchup between these two programs. In addition to earning the win four of their final five home dates last season, the Terrapins have been a force when playing in November in recent years, posting SU wins in 10 straight outings since 2018. The squad kicks off the season listed at No. 21 on the AP Top 25, but has proven to be a steady disappointment to sports bettors when favored by 20 or more points in regular-season action, covering just once in eight outings since November 2015.

The Bobcats open their schedule aiming to flip the script last season’s dismal performance that ended with a 1-5 SU road record and a lopsided 72-48 loss to Iona in the MAAC Tournament. Overall the squad has compiled a 6-14 SU record on the road since the end of the 2018/2019 season, and have gone 4-4 ATS in their past eight.

Quinnipiac has also been outclassed in three contests while pegged as underdogs by 20 or more points since 2016, but sports a 2-1 ATS record over that stretch. The Bobcats have also been blown out in two dates with nationally-ranked opponents since 2016, capped by a crushing 86-53 road loss to Villanova in November 2018.

Quinnipiac Bobcats Outlook

The Bobcats will be leaning heavily on their veterans in their bid to return to respectability this season. Senior Kevin Marfo returns to the Quinnipiac fold after spending last season with Texas A&M. The 24-year-old big man will be looking to rediscover his touch from two seasons again when he piled up 10.2 points per game and led the nation with 13.3 rebounds per game.

Another senior, Jacob Rigoni, aims to build on his career-best numbers from last season. The Australian veteran led the squad with 11.8 points and 6.3 rebounds per game, and particularly impressed on the road, where he tallied 15.6 points per game.

Maryland Terrapins Outlook

Listed as a season-opening +3750 bet in the national championship odds, the Terrapins sport a new look following an offseason overhaul. The squad saw eight players depart, including starters Darryl Morsell and Aaron Wiggins. However, they have filled the void with a pair of new recruits, six transfers, and a walk-on. Recruits Ike Cornish and Julian Reese are rated as four-star, but it will be experience that will make a difference for Maryland.

The most notable among this season’s transfers are guards Fatts Russell and Xavier Green,. Russell spent his first three college campaigns at Rhode Island and recorded 14.7 points, 4.5 assists, and 4.5 rebounds last season. Impacted by extensive layoffs, Green regressed last season from the career numbers he produced at Old Dominion in 2019/2020, when he 12.8 points and 4.2 rebounds per game.  Of course, it is tough to overlook senior guard Eric Ayala, who is expected to assume a leadership role this time around after recording a team-best 15.1 points per game to go along with a respectable 4.3 rebounds per game last season. While this group may need time to gel, Tuesday’s season opener provides them with a golden opportunity to get a head start.

The Pick: Terrapins -22.5 (-112)
