  • Two of the NHL’s hottest teams clash when the Bruins visit the Rangers on Thursday, January 19th
  • Since December 4th, Boston and the Rangers are first and second in the NHL in points percentage
  • We lay out the Bruins vs Rangers odds below, plus our best bet and prediction for this game

Hockey fans are in for a doozy of a matchup when the Bruins visit the Rangers on Thursday, January 19th at Madison Square Garden. Puck drop for this clash between the two Original Six sides is set for 7:00 pm ET on Broadway.

This game marks the first time since November 23rd that the Bruins are not the moneyline favorites in the NHL odds. In that contest, they fell 5-2 to the Panthers. That three goal deficit is tied for their most lopsided loss of the year.

Sporting a 6-1-1 record in the new year, the Rangers are looking to deal Boston their 10th loss of the season. Over/under odds are pegged at 5.5 goals for two of the top three defensive teams in the league. Check out more Bruins vs Rangers odds below as we offer you our best bet and pick for this game.

As the favorites in the Stanley Cup odds, it’s not often that the Big Bad B’s don’t find themselves as moneyline favorites. In fact, they’ve found themselves in that situation just seven times this year, but own just a 4-3-0 record in those contests. That’s a .571 points percentage compared to an .892 points percentage when they’re straight up favorites.

Bruins Moneyline Train Keeps Rolling

Even though they usually don’t pay out nicely on straight up bets, the Bruins return the most money on your investment when picking an NHL team on the moneyline this season, paying out a return of 28% so far. The Bruins are the lone remaining NHL team without double-digit losses.

The NHL leaders will be playing on consecutive nights, but really didn’t have any overnight travel following their 4-1 victory at Belmont Park over the Islanders last night.

With Vezina Trophy odds favorite Linus Ullmark getting the start yesterday, it’s likely Jeremy Swayman will be in goal in the Bruins vs Rangers odds.

If you think that’s cause for worry for the Bruins, think again. Swayman is a perfect 3-0 in the new year, giving up just three goals in three games to go along with a .966 save percentage this month.

Rangers Among NHL’s Best Lately

After a stirring run to the NHL conference finals last season, the Blueshirts were slow out of the gate to start the year. Their performance since early December have put those early-season nightmares to bed.

They are 6-1-1 in 2023 and are getting it done with great goaltending and trademark Rangers stingy defense. New York has given up just 18 goals in eight games in January, an average of 2.25 per game. There’s only been one better team in the NHL since December 4th, and that’s the squad they’ll be facing Thursday night.

Best Points Percentage Since December 4th

Team Points Percentage Goals Against
Boston Bruins .810 2.05
New York Rangers .789 2.26
Carolina Hurricanes .763 2.58
Tampa Bay Lightning .737 2.58
Washington Capitals .714 2.38

Funny enough, not only do the Bruins and Rangers come 1-2 in the standings since the fourth of December, but they also are the top two teams in goals against per game. If the age old adage of defense wins championships proves true this campaign, there’s a good chance one of these two teams will be lifting Lord Stanley’s mug come June.

Once again, Adam Fox has been playing lights out on the blueline and might be a smart value bet in the Norris Trophy odds. Among rearguards, Fox ranks fourth in the league with 45 points and has the best plus/minus of any defenseman in the top 10 in scoring.

Bruins vs Rangers Pick and Prediction

Boston are 5-0 in their last five games playing on no rest, but they’re running into a Rangers squad that is currently playing their best hockey of the year.

Either side can come out with a victory here as is reflected in the pick’em odds on the NHL lines for this contest. Our favorite pick is to wager on the under when these two teams go head-to-head. The Rangers have gone below the betting total three times in a row and the under has hit in 10 of the last 14 matchups between these two.

Bruins vs Rangers Pick: Under 5.5 Goals (-104)
