  • Books are offering odds that impeachment proceedings will begin prior to 2020

Are impeachment proceedings coming against Donald Trump? And if so, how quickly might they come to fruition?

Books are offering dual odds on each of these topics and is of two different minds in terms of which outcomes to favor.

Sportsbooks believe the odds are good that the House of Representatives will initiate an impeachment resolution sometime in 2019. On the other hand, they’re laying odds that passage of the articles of impeachment won’t take place prior to 2020, the end of Trump’s term in the Oval Office.

Michigan Democrat Rep. Rashida Tlaib indicated she intends to introduce an impeachment resolution before the end of March.

Andrew Johnson (1868) and Bill Clinton (1998) are the only Presidents to be impeached. Both were Democrats and both were acquitted by the Senate. The process to impeach Republican President Richard Nixon was underway in 1974 when Nixon opted to tender his resignation.

Are They Jumping the Impeachment Gun?

Democratic leaders committee members are currently looking into Trump’s many unfolding scandals. Their opinion is that they are not yet at the stage of the investigation where a move to impeach is the appropriate action.

California Democrat Maxine Waters was another member of Congress who has been on board to impeach Trump for some time now.

The White House was quick to condemn the notion of impeaching the President, calling it a “fishing expedition.”

Lawyer George Conway, husband of Trump White House counsel Kellyanne Conway, believes there could be grounds to impeach Trump. His argument is based on proof being offered that Trump ordered the Department of Justice to block the AT&T/Time-Warner merger, as has been reported.

The Wheels of Justice Turn Slowly

Anyone involved in a court proceeding knows it’s a slow-moving process.

Testimony last week before Congress by Trump lawyer/fixer Michael Cohen offered damning statements alleging illegal acts involving the President. That ramped up impeachment speculation. Still, Democrat leadership wouldn’t go there.

Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi downplayed talk of impeaching the President. When Nixon was staring at impeachment, it was brought forth via the House Judiciary Committee. Thus, it was taken very seriously by the White House.

The effort to impeach Nixon began in February of 1974. He resigned in August of that year. The entire process with Clinton lasted four months.

The Democrats need to get started almost immediately. Otherwise, impeachment won’t happen before 2020. But expect the process to be initiated prior to the end of this year.
