  • On Friday, September 18th the Bundesliga kicks off with Bayern Munich hosting Schalke at the Allianz Arena
  • While Bayern are the heavy favorites to win the competition for the ninth year running, who is a good bet for the top four, or even top six?
  • Currently, the favorites for top four in the Bundesliga are Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund, RB Leipzig and Borussia Monchengladbach

The Bundesliga, another one of Europe’s finest soccer leagues is kicking off their new season this weekend. This raises multiple questions such as who can get themselves in the top four or top six, and will Bayern win their ninth consecutive Meisterschale? The Bundesliga odds are heavily favoring Bayern as champions, however, the top four race is heavily disputed, as it always is in Germany.

The top four odds are in order of how the top four race finished last year, despite losses these teams will be facing. The top six odds are also interesting given that Hertha Berlin finished in tenth last year, but are favored this time around. Ultimately, expect Bayern Munich to dominate the Bundesliga once again, but do not be surprised to see teams like Leverkusen and Hoffenheim make a push towards the top part of the table this year.

Leverkusen Will Thrive Even Without Havertz, Berlin to Improve

Picking the top six for any league can be tricky, but in the Bundesliga, so many teams are scrapping for European play in the next season. Furthermore, most of these teams are very evenly matched, and with little to no fans this year, it makes these choices all the more difficult. Last season, the two spots outside the top four were claimed by Leverkusen and Hoffenheim, with Wolfsburg and Freiburg three and four points behind, respectively.

Leverkusen is forced to deal with the departure of Kai Havertz to Chelsea, but still have a brilliant squad with names like Alario, Diaby, Bailey and Bellarabi in it. Led by Peter Bosz, Leverkusen made it to the Europa League Round of 16, where they were knocked out by runners-up, Inter Milan. Nonetheless, Kai Havertz will be missed, but his absence will not determine the success of this great club.

Furthermore, you can expect Hoffenheim to have another bright season as well. They have been a bright spot in the Bundesliga in recent times, but probably do not have the firepower to compete with some other teams at the top this year. Hertha Berlin, however, do. Despite losing a handful of players, they managed to sign Deyovaisio Zeefuik, a young right back from the Netherlands, a goalie, and Jhon Cordoba. Note that Cordoba scored 13 goals in the Bundesliga last season and will create instant offense for an already eagerly intense side.

Expect a Dip From Monchengladbach

Moving further up the Bundesliga table, I expect a dip from Monchengladbach this season. Their goal difference of 26 was by far the worst in the top four last season. While they have improved, it is hard to say that the teams around them did not improve even more. Marco Rose’s side was carried by a strong start in the last campaign, which is frankly hard to see happening again. Top fours rarely stay the same in consecutive years, which makes Monchengladbach my choice to probably drop a spot or two in the Bundesliga table.

RB Leipzig are also dealing with a hard loss to Chelsea in form of German striker, Timo Werner. The prolific forward scored 28 goals in the Bundesliga last year and is being replaced by Hee-chan Hwang from Salzburg. You might remember Hwang impressing and scoring a goal at Anfield in the Champions League last season. His 13 goals in the Austrian Bundesliga might not be Werner’s stats, but he has an awful lot of potential. Not to mention, Leipzig still has a brilliantly young squad which will help them in a condensed campaign.

Bayern Munich to Edge Out Borussia Dortmund Again

I know, it is the answer nobody wants to hear. But, Bayern Munich will win the Bundesliga once again this season. It seems as though they are going in a very good direction under the leadership of Hans-Dieter Flick and with the addition of Leroy Sane, their offense is practically unstoppable. They have lost Thiago to Liverpool in the Premier League, but nonetheless, they have built a squad essentially incapable of losing matches.

From Gnabry to Davies, this team is stacked with pace, goal scoring and playmaking which makes it hard to see the yellow and black of Dortmund challenge for the title this year. Even though Reyna, Haaland and Bellingham look promising, if Dortmund lose Jadon Sancho to Manchester United, they are done. They will still finish second because they are indeed that good, but, they can kiss their title hopes goodbye. For me, they are still a little young on offense and need some more depth to battle with Bayern.

Best Bundesliga Bets

Finally, it is time to pick the best bets for this year’s Bundesliga season. Of course, the winner will be Bayern Munich. However, expect Dortmund, Leipzig and Berlin to round out the top four in that order. Berlin has improved, and with more consistency, they will be tough to beat this year. Lastly, expect, Leverkusen and Monchengladbach to finish in fifth and sixth respectively to cap off what should be a wonderful Bundesliga campaign for us to enjoy.

My Picks:

Winner: Bayern Munich (-670)

Top Four: Bayern Munich (N/A), Borussia Dortmund (-3335), RB Leipzig (-167), & Hertha Berlin (+450)

Fifth and Sixth: Leverkusen (-500) & Monchengladbach (-670)
