They call them the Yo-Yo Clubs. Up and down they go regularly. And sure enough, Norwich City and Watford are tipped to fall straight out of England’s Premier League this season after winning promotion last May.

Such a description certainly cannot be applied to Brentford, however.

It is playing in England’s top flight for the first time in 74 years in the coming campaign, which the team kicks off at home against Arsenal on Friday.

But, Brentford, too, is forecast to make an instant return to the Championship as the third favorite for the drop in EPL relegation odds.

Odds as of August 11 at William Hill

Crystal Palace, Burnley, Newcastle United and Southampton are, furthermore, among those deemed to be at risk.

Merely in the past decade, Norwich has been relegated from the EPL three times and promoted back from the Championship three times.

Norwich Won Championship Title

The club is back in the big time after winning the Championship title last season.

But on the two prior occasions, it was promoted in 2014-15 and 2018-19, it was relegated instantly in the following season.

The oddsmakers at William Hill, therefore, make Norwich the joint favorite for another fall through the trapdoor at -110.

The belief, in particular, is that coach Daniel Farke will not abandon his determination to play bold, attacking football.

At the top level, this policy has previously left the team exposed. The last time it was relegated, the side conceded a division-high 75 goals.

Farke’s team has, meanwhile, lost key winger Emiliano Buendia who moved to Aston Villa for £38 million.

But the cash has been used to re-stock the attack with striker Josh Sargent and winger Milot Rashica arriving from Werder Bremen.

Watford is quoted for a first-time tumble after finishing as runner-up in the Championship.

Two defenders have also been signed – with the purchase of center-back Ben Gibson and full-back Dimitrios Giannoulis aimed at improving the defensive stats this time around.

Watford is quoted at the same price for a first-time tumble after finishing as runner-up in the Championship.

Following promotion to the EPL in 2014-15, it survived until it was relegated in 2019-20.

Coach Xisco Munoz took charge last December and won promotion using a direct attacking style of play.

Winger Ismaila Sarr and forward Joao Pedro scored 22 goals between them last season.

However, similarly to Norwich, the team’s way of playing will be punished in the top flight.

Coach Munoz Under Threat

Moreover, given the past impatience of the club’s owners, they could quickly sack Munoz if he makes a poor start – with any resulting turmoil also being punishable at the EPL level.

Watford must hope that the £9 million signing of midfielder Imran Louza from Nantes makes them more solid in midfield.

Brentford won the promotion Playoff against Swansea City to reach the top flight for the first time since 1947.

It is praised as a forward-thinking club with an attractive style of play but is also slated for the drop at +100.

Coach Thomas Frank, however, is shrewd and adaptable. Therefore, his team could spring a few surprises against the big boys as a new, unknown quantity.

The signing of center-back Kristoffer Ajjer is a statement that Brentford does not intend to be pushed around.

It remains to be seen if lead striker Ivan Toney – 31 league goals last season – can make an impactful climb into the EPL.

But the £14 million signing of center-back Kristoffer Ajjer from Celtic is a statement that Brentford does not intend to be pushed around.

Crystal Palace became an established EPL team under the careful command of Roy Hodgson.

He has been replaced by former New York City FC boss Patrick Vieira, which is a risky move.

French club Nice achieved a seventh-placed finish under Vieira in 2018-19. But things deteriorated quickly as the team became a tactical mess – and he was fired in December 2020.

Palace At Serious Risk of Drop

Four wins, two draws and only one defeat in pre-season suggest Vieira may be having some success implementing a more possession-based style.

The signings of defenders Marc Guehi from Chelsea and Joachim Andersen from Lyon may make the team solid. But still, Palace looks at serious risk of the drop.

Meanwhile, Newcastle and Burnley usually find a way to survive and should do so again.

Southampton looked in trouble after losing striker Danny Ings to Aston Villa. But the signing of up-and-coming replacement Adam Armstrong from Blackburn Rovers is a shrewd move.

In conclusion, therefore, it looks like Norwich, Watford and Crystal Palace for the drop.

Picks: Norwich City (-110), Watford (-110), Crystal Palace (+175)
