- Uncertainty surrounding Todd Gurley could open door for Darrell Henderson
- Rams third-round pick still +3000 at Bovada
- NFC champs finished second with 23 regular season rushing TDs
There’s been wide speculation Todd Gurley is still feeling the effects of a knee injury that kept the Los Angeles Rams running back out of the final two games of the NFL regular season.
Early reports even suggest Gurley is suffering from an arthritic condition in his knee — an ailment that limited his production in the NFC Championship and Super Bowl.
“We’re going to find out in training camp,” Gurley told CBS Sports when asked for an update on his knee injury.

The uncertainty surrounding Gurley has the door wide open for rookie Darrell Henderson — the Rams’ third-round pick in the 2019 NFL Draft — who could see an expanded workload heading into the upcoming season.

BetOnline released its NFL OROY odds and has Henderson among the favorites at +700. This may come as somewhat of a shock to bettors as Henderson is still listed as a +3000 long shot to win on Bovada’s board.
Does BetOnline know something other sportsbooks may not?
Even if Gurley misses time to begin the season, it’s highly unlikely the Rams will throw the highly touted Henderson into the fire in his rookie season. Henderson is listed as the No. 3 RB on the Rams depth chart, but Gurley potentially missing any time could change that.
A likely scenario in that case would see Henderson sharing carries with Malcolm Brown to relieve some of the pressure.
However, if Gurley does in fact start the season on the field, Henderson could still see his workload increased to reduce any chance of the three time Pro Bowl running back re-aggravating the knee injury.
What makes Henderson’s chances to win OROY in 2019-20 more intriguing is that he is on arguably the best offensive team in the NFL. The Rams finished second in yards and averaged a second-best 32.9 points per game last season.
Three of the last four OROY winners have been running backs.
Running Backs on a Roll
Another fact working in Henderson’s favor is that three of the last four OROY winners have been running backs.
The Rams used their third-round pick (70th overall) to take Henderson, as Gurley’s overall health is a question mark. Henderson was likely an insurance pick, but could be forced into a more prominent role heading into the upcoming NFL regular season.

Kyler Murray continues to be the heavy favorite to win OROY honors in 2020 as the first overall pick by the Arizona Cardinals. He’s listed at +160 on BetOnline’s board. Despite Murray’s talent, the rookie QB will be limited on an offensively challenged Cardinals team.
Washington Redskins QB Dwayne Haskins is next on the list at +700 along with Henderson.
BetOnline’s odds may be a sign of great things to come for Henderson. In which case getting to Bovada and jumping on the +3000 line while it’s still available is the better bet at this point.
Let's have fun and keep it civil.
